Dr. Kaitlyn Dykstra, assistant professor of biology, has published a first-author research article in Blood Advances, a medical journal published by the American Society of Hematology. 

 

The paper, which encompasses her post-doctoral research, explores the role of the tumor microenvironment in leukemia resistance to chemotherapy and possible therapeutic approaches to overcoming chemoresistance and relapse. 

 

The paper highlights the critical role of mitochondrial homeostasis through autophagy, a cellular recycling pathway in keeping cancer cells alive. Her research at St. Bonaventure looks at how cancer cells generate energy for growth to find novel treatment approaches.
