St. Bonaventure University has qualified for a Mission Continues Fellowship, which allows post 9/11 veterans to successfully transition back into a life that is not surrounded by war by focusing their efforts on tackling projects.
These veterans are given specific tasks in order to prevent any kind of post-traumatic stress disorder.
Through this 26-week fellowship, veterans would come to St. Bonaventure’s campus and actively participate in BonaResponds. BonaResponds is a volunteer organization that helps people in need, whether it is after a disaster or a local project within the community. The veterans would help with any project BonaResponds is currently working on, such as building a wheelchair ramp for a local resident.
“I think it’s a great opportunity for us to work with someone and to make use of their leadership skills to advance BonaResponds,” said James Mahar, coordinator of BonaResponds and a finance professor at the university. “But at the same time we are also helping a veteran ease back into domestic society.”
As part of the fellowship, veterans would complete 20 hours of service work per week. To qualify, veterans must have been active in the United States military after September 11, 2001, for at least 24 months. Candidates must also have a clean criminal record.
The application deadline to apply for the 2015 Delta Class is July 6. For more information, contact James Mahar at firstname.lastname@example.org or visit www.missioncontinues.org.
