Dr. Tammy Rae Matthews, assistant professor of digital journalism and sports journalism in the Jandoli School of Communication master’s program, has earned the distinction of being a 2023 Kopenhaver Center Fellow.
The fellowship program is through the Lillian Lodge Kopenhaver Center for the Advancement of Women in Communication at Florida International University. The Kopenhaver Center’s overarching mission is to empower women in professional and academic roles within the diverse communication fields to emerge as visionaries and leaders capable of making a meaningful impact on their communities and institutions.
Selected as one of the esteemed fellows in the 2023 cohort, Matthews participated in the “Women Faculty Moving Forward: Taking the Lead” workshop on Aug. 6, 2023, in Washington, D.C., preceding the Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication (AEJMC) Conference. This 11th annual workshop supported junior women faculty members by offering valuable mentorship, networking opportunities, and comprehensive preparation for tenure, promotion, administrative roles, and other leadership positions.
The intensive seminar aims to aid early-career academics in navigating the complexities of academic life, equipping them with the skills needed for academic success. The joint sponsorship of the AEJMC Commission on the Status of Women, the Lillian Lodge Kopenhaver Center for the Advancement of Women in Communication at Florida International University, and the AEJMC Council of Affiliates made this event possible.
Maria Len-Rios, a professor and associate director of the Hubbard School of Journalism and Mass Communication at the University of Minnesota, delivered the keynote address for the workshop. Panelists included Meta Carstarphen, area head of strategic communication at the Gaylord College of Journalism and Mass Communication, University of Oklahoma; Juliet Pinto, associate professor of journalism at Penn State University; Katie Place, associate professor of strategic communication at Quinnipiac University; Jessica Retis, director of the School of Journalism at the University of Arizona; and Jennifer Vardeman, director of the Jack Valenti School of Communication at the University of Houston.
