- Nationally known for his expertise on John Milton, as well as the mythological tradition in medieval literature
- Author of “Through a Glass Darkly: Milton’s Reinvention of Mythological Tradition,” the product of 30 years of research using original sources in England, Italy and the United States
- Editor of “Milton and the Middle Ages,” published in 1982, and “Renaissance Latin Drama in England,” published in Germany in 1991
- Author of numerous journal articles, essays and encyclopedia entries and a presenter at national and international conferences on medieval literature
