Computer science researcher to discuss impact of machine learning and AI in computing at SBU

Nov 01, 2024

St. Bonaventure University will host computer science researcher Sai Suman for a conversation and question-and-answer session on working with machine learning (ML) and artificial intelligence (AI) models.

Sai SulmanThe program, which is free and open the public, will be held Tuesday, Nov. 12, at 4:30 p.m. in the auditorium (G21) of the Walsh Science Center on campus. The title of his address is “Exploring the Impact of Machine Learning and Artificial Intelligence in Modern Computing.”

Suman is a Ph.D. candidate in the School of Computing at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln (UNL), where his research expertise is in the design of AI/ML approaches and mathematical modeling for communication networks, communication networking and distributed computing.

Dr. Zahmeeth Sakkaff, assistant professor of Computer Science at St. Bonaventure, says Suman’s work in AI, ML, and mathematical modeling is not just about research, but about creating tools and insights that reshape our understanding of communication networks.

“Sai’s passion for learning and teaching, blending theory with hands-on discovery, embodies the very spirit of innovation and mentorship we strive to cultivate,” she said. “He will share his expertise and, no doubt, spark new ideas within us all.”

Suman is the author of several publications concerning the use of ML/AI in cybersecurity, threat detection and high-energy physics and received the outstanding graduate research award in the School of Computing at UNL in 2024. He is also actively involved in committees that plan conferences sponsored by the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) and the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM).

Suman’s visit is co-sponsored by the university’s Visiting Scholar Committee and Department of Computer Science.
