Transit Middle School swept the individual and team awards at the regional phase of the 2020 MATHCOUNTS competition, hosted Saturday by St. Bonaventure University.
MATHCOUNTS is a national competition for sixth-, seventh- and eighth-grade students.
Contestants worked both individually and in four-person school teams on questions designed by the National Society of Professional Engineers, the main sponsoring organization.
The six schools competing were: Allegany-Limestone Middle School, West Seneca East Middle School, Transit Middle School, Orchard Park Middle School, Amherst Christian Academy, and Heim Middle School.
The teams from Transit, Allegany-Limestone and West Seneca East have been invited to the New York state competition in March at the RPI campus in Troy. The top individuals from the state contest will advance to the national competition in May.
The Transit Middle School team of Bhattacharjee, Liu, Grant Wang and Eileen Wang won the team competition. Transit Middle School is part of the Williamsville Central School District.
Other organizations providing financial support for the contest at the national level include CNA Foundation, Phillips 66, U.S. Department of Defense, Northrup Grumman Foundation, Raytheon Company, Texas Instruments, 3MGives, Art of Problem Solving, NextThought, and the National Society of Professional Engineers.
The local contest was financially supported by St. Bonaventure and an anonymous grant.
