In general, herbivores prefer the nitrogen-rich foliage of maple species compared to the unpalatable, indigestible lignin-laden leaves of oaks. Therefore, red maple is subject to heavy browsing by deer and other animals. Fortunately, red maple rarely fails to set seed, so regeneration is probable except under the most intense herbivory.
