#Bonas Quick Center honors high school artists

Winning works of art on display through April 27

The Regina A. Quick Center for the Arts at St. Bonaventure honored 78 young, local artists at its annual High School Juried Art Exhibition on Wednesday, March 9.

The works were selected for the exhibition from more than 300 submissions after an extensive jurying process from professional judges.

Quick Center for the Arts (left), and Bernie Valento, vice president for enrollment at SBU (right), congratulate four area high school students on their arts awards: Miranda Gross (Judges Honors), Kaela West (SBU Artist Honors), Jessica Byington (Judges Honors), and Morgan Gumhalte (Judges Honors).

Participating schools included Allegany-Limestone, Belfast, Cassadaga Valley, Cattaraugus-Little Valley, Clymer, Coudersport, Cuba-Rushford, Ellicottville, Genesee Valley, Hornell, Jamestown, Olean, Oswayo Valley, Pioneer, Portville, Randolph, Salamanca, Scio, Wellsville and West Valley, as well as home-schooled students.

Winners, their families and friends were honored with an exhibition opening and reception. In addition to being selected for exhibition, Ludwig Brunner, executive director of the Quick Center, presented three Judges Honors Awards to Jessica Byington, 11th grade, of Pioneer High School (art teacher: Scott Losi), for her earthenware sculpture “Sprout”; Miranda Gross, 12th grade, of Randolph Central School (art teacher: Crystal Walters), for her colored pencil drawing “Colorful Cat”; and Morgan Gumhalter, 12th grade, of Randolph Central School (art teacher: Crystal Walters), for her charcoal pencil work “American Flag.”

Bernie Valento, vice president for enrollment at St. Bonaventure, presented three SBU Artist Honors awards, which included a $1,000 scholarship to attend St. Bonaventure University, to Arica Enders, 12th grade, of Belfast Central School (art teacher: Deborah Lyman), for her pastel piece “Flower Girl”; Sarah Marsh, 11th grade, of Belfast Central School (art teacher: Deborah Lyman), for her color pencil drawing “Longstanding Youth”; and Kaela West, 12th grade, of Belfast Central School (art teacher: Deborah Lyman), for her ink work “Poe.”

Winning works of art will remain on view on the mezzanine of the Quick Center through Wednesday, April 27. The Quick Center is open from 10 a.m. to 5  p.m. Monday through Friday and from noon to 4 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. Holiday hours vary.
