St. Bonaventure University students can now apply for the Chautauqua Scholars program, a new collaboration with Chautauqua Institution to provide a one-credit offering focused on any one of nine themed weeks this summer at the Institution.
Located on the shores of Chautauqua Lake one hour from campus, Chautauqua Institution is a non-profit education center and interfaith community that comes alive each summer with a unique mix of fine and performing arts, lectures, interfaith worship and programs, and recreational activities.
This prestigious scholarship will be awarded to select students from any major who indicate a rationale for a desired week of study at Chautauqua.
“This is a tremendous opportunity for our students to immerse themselves for a week at a place that shares so many of the values our university does, a place that has a deep appreciation for and commitment to not only education, but to civil discourse,” said Dr. David Hilmey, dean of the School of Arts & Sciences.
The Chautauqua Scholars program will create an intersection between these institutions, Hilmey said, leading to deeper insight to not only understand the civic role we play, but to become leaders and designers, aiming at a better and more inclusive American experience for all.
The program will put students in contact with the world’s leading experts in their interested fields of study and allow them to immerse themselves in the topic of their choice, thereby playing a role in curating a transformational educational experience.
“We’re thrilled to be able to invite St. Bonaventure students to experience the world as it’s presented through Chautauqua’s programs,” said Michael Hill, ’96, president of Chautauqua and a St. Bonaventure trustee.
The program scholarships will include:
To apply to be a Chautauqua Scholar, contact Dr. Hilmey at email@example.com.
Interested students must provide their academic standing, and a letter of nomination from an SBU faculty member who will serve as an off-site mentor during their study at Chautauqua (faculty stipend provided). A two-page summary of the student’s interest in the topic and content is also required.
Students may receive one credit of internship or independent study, although the program can also be taken for no credit. Depending on the week chosen and work agreed upon, it may be possible to complete the writing (W) or diversity (D) designations for their General Education requirements.
Students and faculty mentors will be responsible for satisfying designation requirements for the week at Chautauqua, if proposed. Honors students, with the support of their Honors adviser and the Honors Program director, may utilize the week at Chautauqua to complete their required “Honors Experience” or could use the time to develop their Honors project necessary for their Honors degree.
Each week of programming at Chautauqua is guided by an over-arching theme.
Monday through Friday, there are two primary lectures, one at 10:45 a.m. and the Interfaith Lecture at 2 p.m. Literary arts and performing and visual arts, as well as programs sponsored by community organizations, also populate each week’s schedule.
Details on speakers will continue to be added to the schedule until the season launches on June 23. To see the latest information about speakers and performing arts programming, visit http://www.chq.org/2018.
