By the time final exams roll around, students and faculty members are overwhelmed with stress. The University Ministries team at St. Bonaventure hopes to ease the nerves of everyone by offering the traditional Blessing of the Brains.
At 9 p.m. on Thursday, May 7, the Blessing of the Brains prayer service will take place on the lawn between the Hickey Dining Hall and Devereux Hall (rain or shine).
“The entire university community is invited because we recognize that not only do students need extra prayers, but faculty and staff need some time for prayer and meditation, too,” said Julianne Wallace, associate director of faith and formation, worship and ministry. “Blessing of the Brains is a wonderful tradition that helps students and staff take the time to relax, pray and recognize that God will be with us throughout the stressful week of finals.”
Finals are a stressful time for the entire SBU community. The prayer service allows everyone to come together and have a moment of reflection and peace.
“When we ‘bless brains,’ we are inviting the community to stop the many ‘treadmills’ and remember why we are here,” said Fr. Francis Di Spigno,O.F.M., executive director of University Ministries. “When we do that, we can then invite God’s grace and presence to accompany and support us through our challenges. We are not mysteriously placing knowledge in our heads, we’re embracing the silence to realize the amount of knowledge and information we have acquired during the semester.”
People of all faith traditions are encouraged to attend.
Late-night breakfast in the Hickey Dining Hall will immediately follow the service; it starts at 10 p.m. and is free and open to all students.
Final exams at the university run from Friday, May 8, to Wednesday, May 13.
