Dr. Gregory J. Privitera, associate professor of psychology, has released the first edition of “Research Methods for the Behavioral Sciences” in addition to a study guide for the book.
“The challenge for publishing is how to write it in a new way to see your contribution and want to adopt it,” Privitera said. “The book has a stronger emphasis on ethics, which is a part of the research process. I also wanted to make this book reader-friendly for students.”
His book, published by Sage Publications in Thousand Oaks, Calif., has sold more than 8,000 copies and has been adopted at universities such as Boston University, University of Alabama and the University of Toronto.
“I learned more about my career while writing the books than I knew before I started writing the books, which has been an amazing learning process,” Privitera said. “It was also an opportunity for professional development. Overall, it’s a humbling experience.”
Although Privitera is the author of the book, he said he’s not responsible for all of the work that went into it.
“It’s important to emphasize that nothing is ever accomplished in isolation,” Privitera said. “There were numerous editors who spent time developing this project and other professionals who coordinated reviews; it’s been a collaborative effort.”
Privitera will have five other publications released over the next two years. Next year, he will publish and release the second edition of “Statistics for the Behavioral Sciences” in addition to a study guide for the book. The first edition of the book was released in August 2011.
During the summer of 2014, Privitera will publish and release, “THE Advisement Plan: The Most Insightful Guide For Getting Into Graduate School With A Four-Year Plan For Students in Psychology and the Sciences.”
“The inspiration for the book was my class of 2013,” Privitera said. “The last four years taught me that many students don’t know the opportunities they have in social sciences. The book is for the average students because they want to succeed but don’t know how. This book will offer extensive information to give students those opportunities.”
This publication will be featured at the American Psychological Association Conference from Aug. 7-10, 2014, in Washington, D.C. The APA is the largest governing association for psychology in the United States with around 30,000 members. Privitera has been a member since 2006.
By December 2015, Privitera will release the first edition of "Statistics for the Behavioral Sciences, Brief Edition," which will include a study guide for the book. Both books will be released in 2015.
