School of Education faculty member Dr. Paula Scraba, O.S.F., represented St. Bonaventure University at the 2018 ASACCU Conference hosted at the University of San Diego July 17-20. The theme of the Association of Student Affairs of Catholic Colleges and Universities’ (ASACCU) conference this year was Visioning Contemporary Catholic Higher Education: Preparing Changemakers to Confront Today’s Urgent Challenges.
Scraba collaborated on presentations highlighting changemaking with professionals in the field from other universities and promoted best practices at St. Bonaventure. She co-presented with Rick Trietley, SBU Class of ’86, vice president of Student Affairs at Viterbo University and former VP of Student Affairs at St. Bonaventure. In their presentation, “Student Athletes as Campus Changemakers: Identity through Character,” Scraba and Trietley discussed the leadership opportunities for character development in student-athletes comparing NAIA and NCAA athletic associations.
Scraba participated in a second presentation with Fr. Jay Fostner, O.Praem, Ph.D., vice president for Mission and Student Affairs at St. Norbert College in De Pere, Wisc. They discussed “Mental Health Issues with Today’s Students.” Scraba said her remarks were based on issues prevalent to SBU students after consultation with Chris Anderson, director of the university’s Wellness Center.
Also at the conference, certification was provided in QPR Suicide Prevention Training. In addition, keynote addresses were given on educational leadership, redeeming administration and redeeming conflict from a member of the Harvard Negotiation Project. Further changemaking volunteer service opportunities were provided for all participants.
Scraba noted the university’s A-10 colleagues the Flyers of the University of Dayton, Ohio, will host next year’s ASACCU conference July 16-19, 2019. The theme will be Taking Flight: Developing Leaders for the Common Good. All members of the St. Bonaventure community are encouraged to attend and submit proposals.
