Dr. Scott Simpson, assistant professor of chemistry at St. Bonaventure University, has been awarded a $55,000 research grant from the American Chemical Society’s Petroleum Research Fund.
The grant is titled “Using Density Functional Theory to Predict Heterogeneous Catalysts for the Selective Formation of cis-2-butene from 1,2-butadiene.”
The Petroleum Research Fund is an endowed fund that supports fundamental research at nonprofit institutions that is directly related to petroleum or fossil fuels.
The goal of Simpson’s research is to develop heterogeneous catalysts to produce chemicals in a more inexpensive way.
“This grant will provide my research students with funding, allow me to buy new software and hardware upgrades to the Chemistry Department’s Beowulf computer cluster, and allow my group to travel to a national conference to discuss our research,” said Simpson.
“The upgrades to the computer cluster will allow us to investigate these catalysts faster than before, all while paying students to get real research experience. That’s what I’m really excited about!” he said.
