Jamestown Community College and St. Bonaventure University officials have signed an agreement to strengthen academic program and transferability opportunities for students at both institutions.
Under the new partnership, students will benefit from enhanced admission and academic advisement initiatives, career and transfer pathways for academic programs, and cultural opportunities at JCC and St. Bonaventure.
Presidents from both colleges signed the agreement Monday afternoon at JCC’s Olean campus.
The partnership is designed to facilitate opportunities for students to pursue higher education credentials at the associate’s, bachelor’s, and master’s degree levels.
“One of the fundamental reasons that the friars came here 160 years ago to build St. Bonaventure was to educate the people of this region,” said Dr. Dennis DePerro, St. Bonaventure president.
“We’ve had articulation agreements with JCC for some time now,” DePerro said, “but the decision to formalize an agreement and to work as true partners will be a great benefit to high school students in the region looking to find more affordable pathways to a college degree and a rewarding career.”
The agreement will spur development of stronger linkages in several academic areas to provide distinct pathways for students into high-demand occupations.
Initial areas under consideration for special “academy” relationships are business, education, psychology, sociology, cybersecurity, and criminology, with all programs featuring an eight-semester plan in which students earn associate’s and bachelor’s degrees in four years.
The agreement also outlines how online and hybrid delivery methods may be integrated into academic programming to minimize the impact of distance on students located at St. Bonaventure or at JCC’s campuses in Jamestown and Olean.
Also under consideration is a dual admission process in which students are admitted to JCC and SBU simultaneously, have academic advisers at both institutions, and are able to participate in activities and services at each institution.
“This expanded partnership between JCC and SBU extends the reach of both institutions,” said JCC president Dr. Cory Duckworth. “JCC will be better positioned to assist in preparing students for success and advanced study at SBU. In addition, the college will gain access to student markets beyond the immediate geographic area.”
The partnership agreement also focuses on the conditional acceptance of students who are underprepared for the four-year college experience at SBU. Those students would complete courses at JCC to raise their academic profile prior to matriculating at SBU.
According to JCC and SBU officials, the new agreement complements a strong relationship between the two institutions which has provided students with seamless educational experiences for several decades.
“This agreement marks the beginning of an exciting new chapter in the long and very positive relationship between JCC and St. Bonaventure University,” said Marilyn Zagora, JCC’s vice president of academic affairs. “Now that our enhanced partnership has been outlined in our new agreement, we are eager to begin planning the implementation of these opportunities for the students of our region.
“To that end, a steering committee of people from both institutions will begin working immediately to develop actions that will position us to put many facets of this new collaborative venture in place by fall 2019,” Zagora added.
