Dr. Matrecia James has been named dean of St. Bonaventure University’s School of Business, President Sr. Margaret Carney, O.S.F., announced today.
James is the associate dean of Jacksonville University’s Davis College of Business and director of its graduate business programs. She begins work at St. Bonaventure on July 1.
“Dr. James brings to St. Bonaventure energy, innovation and an abundance of experience that will help us continue to move our nationally accredited School of Business forward for the next generation of Bonaventure students,” said Dr. Joseph Zimmer, provost and vice president for Academic Affairs.
James earned her Ph.D. in business administration from Florida State in 2005, majoring in organizational behavior and minoring in human resource development and behavioral dynamics. Her doctoral dissertation was on “Antecedents and Consequences of Cynicism in Organizations.”
“I’m excited to become a part of the St. Bonaventure leadership team and graciously accept the role of dean and the responsibility of leading the William E. and Ann L. Swan Business Center into a new era of innovative excellence,” James said. “I embrace the challenge and mission of ‘developing responsible leaders for the greater good and the bottom line’ and will capitalize on the expertise and experiences of the faculty to do so.”
As associate dean since 2013, James has provided leadership and support for the Davis College of Business in a manner that supports the overall vision and mission of the college, including but not limited to:
James is also Jacksonville’s director of Leadership Development Portfolios, an electronic platform she designed and maintained for the storage and tracking of graduate leadership development portfolios in order to monitor student progression in portfolio development.
Prior to becoming associate dean, James was an assistant (then associate) professor of management in the Davis College of Business.
“I look forward to working in partnership with the corporate community to raise the profile of the school and create an enduring reputation of responsive excellence in both the community and business environments,” James said. “The School of Business has a history of academic distinction and community involvement. I plan to honor and strengthen this legacy.”
In 2009, James founded Multi-level Sustainable Leadership Consulting to provide individuals and organizations with the tools, guidance and expertise needed to promote personal growth and development; improve organizational resilience and adaptability; and enhance overall leadership and sustainability.
The goal of MSL Consulting, James said, is to facilitate organizational analysis, performance assessments, behavioral insights, as well as learning and engagement that lead to lasting change while increasing individual and organizational performance.
From 2001 to 2005, while working on her doctorate, James was a research assistant, teaching assistant and course developer at Florida State.
James also was a business education teacher from 1996 to 2001 at Grand Ridge School in Marianna, Fla.
James earned her master’s degree in business education (2000) and her bachelor’s degree in business administration (1993) from Florida A&M University; she also minored in accounting.
James takes over for Dr. Carol Fischer, who’s served as interim dean since February 2015.
“I can’t thank Carol enough for her tremendous leadership over the last 18 months,” Zimmer said.
