Feb 09, 2024

SBU's Dr. Stephanie Vogel, assistant professor of psychology, and Dr. Robin Valeri, professor of psychology, along with Dr. Kevin Borgeson, associate professor of criminology at Salem State University, co-edited the recently published second edition of "Serial Crime: A Criminological and Psychological Analysis."

The text examines a number of serial crimes including murder, rape, sex offending, stalking, and arson. Psychological and criminological theories are used to explain the underlying motivations for each offender covered.

Additionally, the second edition of "Hate Crimes: Typology, Motivations, and Victims," co-edited by Valeri and Borgeson, was recently published by Carolina Academic Press.

The text features separate chapters on LGBT, race, religion, gender, and disability motivated hate crimes. To address the increase in hate crimes occurring on campuses and in cyberspace, the book also includes chapters on campus hate crimes and virtual hate. Each chapter opens with a relevant case study and chapter authors draw on theories from criminology, psychology, and sociology to explore the ideologies of hatemongers and extremist groups.
