Eleven St. Bonaventure graduates who
were part of the university's Franciscan
Health Care Professions program
began their studies at George Washing-
ton University School of Medicine last
August.
The students were among first-year
medical students who participated in
George Washington's annual White
Coat Ceremony on Aug. 20, 2011. The
ceremony officially welcomes first-year
students into the GW Medical Center
community.
The students were presented their med-
ical white coats, recited an oath, and
signed the School of Medicine's Honor
Code. Ten of the St. Bonaventure stu-
dents were accepted into the SBU-GW
Combined Degree Program in Medicine
as incoming SBU freshmen, while one
reserved her seat at GW as a St. Bona-
venture sophomore through the Early
Assurance Program.
In both cases, the students were
awarded a provisional acceptance to
George Washington School of Medicine
and seats were reserved for them at
GW upon satisfactory completion of
academic requirements at SBU.
St. Bonaventure accepts up to 15 stu-
dents per year for freshman entry into
this prestigious and highly competitive
dual admission program with George
Washington.
Regional MATHCOUNTS
competition held at SBU
On Feb. 11, St. Bonaventure hosted the
regional phase of the 2012 MATH-
COUNTS competition, a national con-
test for sixth-, seventh- and eighth-grade
students.
Contestants worked both individually
and in four-person school teams on ques-
tions designed by the National Society of
Professional Engineers (NSPE), the main
sponsoring organization. The two
schools competing were Allegany-Lime-
stone Middle School and Cheektowaga
Central School. Allegany-Limestone gar-
nered top individual and top school
honors.
Expert on nonviolence discusses
social inequality in SBU talk
Nonviolence expert Robert L. Holmes,
Ph.D., talked about "Social Inequality,
Affirmative Action, and Reparations"
in a March 15 pro-
gram on campus.
Holmes was the
spring semester
Lenna Endowed Vis-
iting Professor.
Established in 1990,
the Lenna Endowed
Visiting Professorship
is funded through gifts from the late
Betty S. Lenna Fairbank and Reginald
A. Lenna of Jamestown.
Holmes is professor emeritus of philos-
ophy at the University of Rochester. He
specializes in ethics, and in social and
political philosophy.
During his time at St. Bonaventure,
Holmes sat in on Dr. Barry Gan's Philos-

Eleven SBU graduates among 2011-2012 first-year students
at George Washington University School of Medicine
