St. Bonaventure University | 3
A Letter from the Dean
W
elcome to the 2011-2012 Re-
view of the School of Arts and
Sciences. The publication as-
pires to provide interested readers with a
snapshot of the activities, events and
achievements of the academic year just
completed in the arts and sciences at St.
Bonaventure University. Current and
prospective students, alumni and other
members of the Bonaventure community
will find in its pages ample confirmation
of why -- and how -- this School pro-
vides a learner-centered, student-focused
culture of teaching, research and com-
munity service, guided by our inclusive
values of Discovery, Community and In-
dividual Worth.
We are home to 16 departments and we
offer majors and minors spanning the
natural, the social, and the human sci-
ences, as well as the arts (go to
www.sbu.edu/ArtsandSciences
then click
on "Departments and Programs" on the left).
Forty percent of undergraduate students who earn a degree at St.
Bonaventure are enrolled in one of this School's majors. The School's
faculty touch the lives of every undergraduate student who attends St.
Bonaventure through their teaching of the university's core curriculum,
as well as providing curricular offerings embedded in the degrees offered
by the schools of Business, Education and Journalism.
Commensurate with the liberal arts tradition toward which we con-
tribute, we welcome and encourage students still exploring multiple pas-
sions and academic options to join our special programs for undeclared
arts and sciences (MAP). Other students may find appealing our newest
major, the Individualized Major, which permits students to pursue a
mentored degree program of their own design.
These are some of the reasons why I am so pleased as dean of the School
of Arts and Sciences to work with faculty who are known for the excel-
lence of their teaching, their devotion to advising and mentoring, and for
their pursuit of research. It is a point of pride of our faculty to advise
and mentor undergraduates who come to study with them, and to help
prepare them for careers and graduate school. That extends as well to

research endeavors, and you will read many
examples of that in these pages.
You will learn about capstone research our
students undertake through their majors or
the Honors Program. You will also read ex-
amples of significant faculty research accom-
plishment.
You'll find new initiatives, including the
launch of our Center for Law and Society
and the enhancement of facilities dedicated to
the arts. These pages introduce you to faculty
members who have most recently joined the
School, a group of teacher-scholars of laud-
able accomplishments. And you will read
about community service, guest speakers,
workshop presenters, internships taken and
emerging curricular developments fostered by
a recent School initiative.
This is an exciting time to be a student of the
Arts and Sciences. If you are an alum, I hope
this review provides you not only with a fond
reminder of the setting so many of you told
me prepared you for life, but confirmation
that St. Bonaventure's School of Arts and Sci-
ences continues to renew and enhance its mis-
sion, providing exceptional education for its
students. If you are a prospective student, these
pages offer a hint of the many ways our faculty
-- and the entire SBU community -- stand
ready to prepare you for a future of success.
Please enjoy this publication. Let me know
your reaction or if you have questions and sug-
gestions related to the Arts and Sciences or
your participation in their development. Even
as we reflect upon the past year's activities, all
of us in the School of Arts and Sciences are
busily planning new activities for the coming
year. You can expect another snapshot a year
from now to add to your album of the Arts
and Sciences at SBU.
