Professor of history Dr. Joel
Horowitz
has published "Argentine
Historical Writing during an Era of
Political and Economic Instability"
in Volume 5: Historical Writing
since 1945 of the Oxford History of
Historical Writing, which is pub-
lished by Oxford University Press.
The chapter analyzes the evolution
of the writing of history in Ar-
gentina since the end of World War
II with particular attention to the
problems created by political and
economic crises. The 718-page vol-
ume has essays by 36 scholars resid-
ing in Europe, Canada, the United
States, Australia and Mexico. The
volume is divided into two parts;
part one selects and surveys theoreti-
cal and interdisciplinary approaches
to history, while the second part ex-
amines select regional and national
historiographies from around the
world. It aims to provide an authori-
tative survey of the field and to pro-
voke cross-cultural comparisons.
John J. Mulryan, Ph.D., retired
Board of Trustee Professor, profes-
sor of English and professor emeri-
tus in the School of Arts and
Sciences, has published "Vincenzo
Cartari's `Images of the Gods of the
Ancients': The First Italian Mythog-
raphy." The book was translated
and annotated by Mulryan and pub-
lished by the Arizona Center for
Medieval and Renaissance Studies.
This 500-page translation of Car-
tari's 16th century text is profusely
illustrated and richly annotated. The
text was used by Renaissance artists
and poets, and is eagerly awaited by
specialists in art history. It is the first
mythological text that contains cap-
tioned images that are directly re-
lated to the analyses of the myths in
the text. It is also the first mytholog-
ical text in a vernacular language
(Italian); all previous studies had been
in Latin. This expanded the audience
to include women, who were not
trained in Latin, and most men. This
is the first complete English transla-
tion of the "Imagini," and the first
annotated translation of Cartari.
D
r. Gregory Privitera, assistant
professor of psychology, au-
thored a 736-page book titled
"Statistics for the Behavioral Sciences."
The book was published by Sage Publi-
cations, Inc.
In this text, Privitera highlights statisti-
cal methods using an integrated
method of instruction. The book en-
compasses a cutting-edge balance of
theory and application that illuminates
modern-day research with the statisti-
cal software researchers use.
"This book incorporates instructions
for using SPSS statistical software into
the main text," he said. "Writing this
book has strengthened my teaching
and ability to understand where stu-
dents struggle most. Publishing also is
a humbling process and I am grateful
to be able to share this project in the
classroom with students."
By incorporating laboratory with lec-
ture instruction in the main text, the
book will strengthen a foundation of
learning for future research-based
classes. "One of the unique features of
his book is his Making Sense sections,
which break down the most difficult
concepts in statistics for students," says
Christine Cardone, editor at SAGE
Publications, Inc.
"Statistics for the Behavioral Sciences"
will serve as the text for the university's
undergraduate statistics courses. Privit-
era distinguished his authored text ver-
sus others in the market by describing
his book as having, "full coverage of all
course content in behavioral statistics."
He also wrote an accompanying 504-
page study guide, which students will
use to review chapter content, take
practice quizzes and apply their class-
room knowledge.
Due to his innovative approach, Privit-
era was invited to speak at the 34th an-
nual National Institute on the Teaching
of Psychology (NITOP) in January
2012, in St. Pete Beach, Fla. This an-
nual conference is attended by thou-
sands of faculty each year, and the
honor of presenting at this conference
is reserved for those who are most re-
spected in the field of psychology.
In addition to authoring "Statistics for
the Behavioral Sciences," Privitera
wrote a 2007 publication in his area of
research titled "The Psychological Di-
eter: It's Not All About the Calories."
He also has another book in develop-
ment, "Research Methods for the Be-
havioral Sciences."
Privitera is an adviser to 27 undergrad-
uate juniors at St. Bonaventure, en-
couraging them to continue their
education and providing support sur-
rounding university course program-
ming.
Privitera received his Ph.D. in behav-
ioral neuroscience at the University at
Buffalo and went on to complete post-
doctoral research at Arizona State Uni-
versity, where he studied how to
enhance liking for healthier foods.
