The advanced certificate in school counseling is designed for guidance counselors in New York state schools. State guidelines allow for initial school counselor certification upon the completion of a 48-hour MSED, but require 60 credits within five years for professional (permanent) certification. St. Bonaventure’s counseling department offers the 48-credit school counseling MSED program along with the 12-credit certificate.
Students enrolling in the advanced certificate program are generally working counselors completing this New York requirement, or new graduates of the 48-hour program opting to complete the additional 12 credits before entering the work force.
Most graduates of the certificate program are already working in a school setting, or will soon be doing so. Some will use the school counselor training to secure positions in other human service agencies and settings.
