EMBRACE IT AFRICA NEEDS YOUR HELP

Embrace It Africa Inc., a St. Bonaventure student group formed in 2008 to assist a village in Uganda, has entered a project in the Give for Youth Challenge to win the chance to crowd-fund on GiveforYouth.org. Now, the group needs your vote.

Take a second to cast your vote (by March 1), and please forward this to anyone in your network. The more votes we get, the better our chances to get this project off the ground!

Here’s a quick description and link of our project voting page: http://giveforyouth.maker.good.is/projects/mikwano.

Microsoft teamed up with good civic-minded community platform to find 20 amazing youth-serving nonprofits to feature on GiveforYouth.org, a microgiving portal that helps organizations fund microprojects for young people. The top 20 vote-getters in the Give for Youth Challenge will get to crowd-fund their projects on GiveforYouth.org. Microsoft will match funds raised during the challenge phase, up to $100,000 across all organizations.

Thanks for helping us achieve our goal.

FRIDAY FORUM

Where: University Club

When: 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. Friday, Feb. 22

Lunch: $3 (pay in the Hickey)

Speaker: Daniel Ellis

A brief history of the teaching of college writing in general, and the College Composition course in particular. Students just aren't prepared to write in college anymore. Or so has run the College Professor’s lament for 130 years, at least.

This informal talk discusses the history of the response—primarily in the form of the Freshman Comp course—to this seemingly endless problem, and the ways this history has been told and retold by those same professors, and by the scholars who study the history of writing instruction.

VOLUNTEER INCOME TAX ASSISTANCE (VITA)

The tenth year of the St. Bonaventure University Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program continues at a great pace. During the first three weeks of tax season, we have prepared more than 200 tax returns, generating over $450,000 in tax refunds for Cattaraugus County workers. This brings us to a cumulative 10-year total of over 3,300 tax returns and $5.25 million in tax refunds flowing into Cattaraugus County. The St. Bonaventure VITA program operates out of the United Way office at 807 W. State Street in Olean, N.Y.

The tax office is open six days per week with a variety of morning, afternoon, and evening appointments available. Cattaraugus County workers can call 716-373-2534 to see if they qualify for the free tax service and to set an appointment. We will be offering some appointment times during Spring Break, although not our full schedule. Phone messages will be checked daily, and callers will be contacted to arrange appointments.

With five weeks to go in “tax season,” no sleep ‘til Easter Break!
