Welcome from the Dean
Eleanor H. Green
I am very pleased to welcome you to the School of Arts and Sciences, the largest and most diverse school on campus. With our sixteen departments, our varied majors, excellent faculty, and multidisciplinary programs, we offer something for every undergraduate student at St. Bonaventure. We service most of the courses for the Clare College core curriculum and the Honors Program, and all students, whether in Business, Teacher Education, or Journalism/ Mass Communication, will take many of their classes within our school.
Bonas students looking ahead to post-graduate study in the health care field may take advantage of the university’s Franciscan Health Care Professions program that combines undergraduate work at St. Bonaventure with medical, dental, pharmacy, and physical therapy programs at professional schools like George Washington University and the University of Buffalo. Outside of health care, our alumni have been successful in a range of fields such as law, higher education, business, government, sports, and numerous other vocations, many of them outside of their major.
Through our internships, study abroad opportunities, multidisciplinary minors, service learning courses, undergraduate research, co-curricular activities, and senior capstone experience, all based on the spirit and ideals of the Franciscan tradition, we ensure that our graduates can obtain the knowledge, skills, and experience they need to achieve a satisfying career and an enriched personal life.
Please explore our web pages to see what the School of Arts and Sciences can offer you. Whether you are interested in the natural sciences, the arts, humanities, or social sciences, we have courses and majors for you to explore and experienced faculty available to advise you. Do not hesitate to get in touch with my office if you have a question or concern. I wish you a very successful and enjoyable college experience.

Liberal Arts and Sciences:
The Foundation of
Undergraduate Education at
St. Bonaventure University
Courses and programs are designed to introduce young men and women to the world of ideas; to develop their powers of reasoning and expression; to enable them to think meaningfully about spirituality and personal identity; to become aware of the history, literature, science, art and institutions which constitute our culture; to develop aesthetic awareness and appreciation; and to prepare them for an active and effective role in the contemporary world.
To these ends, students in every school of the University pursue studies in the School of Arts and Sciences, which offers a wide variety of programs of study: art history, biology, biochemistry, bioinformatics, biophysics, chemistry, classical languages, combined degree programs, computational physics, computer science, English (including American literature, British literature, creative writing, & great writers), engineering physics, environmental science, French, gerontology, Greek, history, international studies, Latin, mathematics, modern languages, music, philosophy, philosophy prebusiness, philosophy prelaw, physics, political science, pre-medicine & pre-health, psychology, sociology, social sciences (including criminology & social work), Spanish, theater, theology, visual arts, and women’s studies.
In addition to most of the areas listed above that also have minor programs of study, students may minor in Arabic & Islamic studies and nonviolence. Further, students can design their own major in consultation with the Honors Program.
