SBU TO HOST VISIT BY DR. PATRICIA BURLAUD

Dr. Patricia Burlaud, who has devoted more than 30 years to the advancement of women’s education and leadership in West Africa, the Middle East and the U.S., will be the guest speaker at a Thursday, April 12, program at St. Bonaventure.

Burlaud, dean of Global Academic Programs at New York Institute of Technology (NYIT), will present the program “Lady Quark: p and Love,” at 4:30 p.m. in the auditorium of the William F. Walsh Science Center. The campus is invited to attend. Her visit is sponsored by the university’s Women’s Studies program, which is also hosting Burlaud as the speaker of the annual Mary Devereux Luncheon on campus.

Burlaud assists the provost at NYIT in overseeing the operations of the institution’s five global campuses — in Amman, Bahrain, Abu Dhabi, Nanjing and Vancouver — with 120 faculty and more than 5,000 students around the world.

Prior to joining NYIT, Burlaud served as the associate dean for general education at Zayed University, a women’s governmental institution in the United Arab Emirates whose mission is to develop a strong leadership education for nationals.

Burlaud founded and chaired the Academic Affairs Standing Committee, which obtained the initial institutional accreditation of Zayed University with Middle States, the first such accreditation in the Middle East.

After obtaining her Ph.D. in high energy physics at Pierre & Marie Curie University, France, in 1979, Burlaud contributed to numerous scientific collaborations. As a specialist of quark physics, she worked with CERN (European Center for Nuclear Research) teams based in Geneva, in experiments led by two experts who won Nobel Prizes for the discovery of new fundamental particles.

Burlaud is affiliated with the American Council on Education’s Office of Women in Higher Education and is the New York state coordinator for the organization.

VISITING ARTIST TO PERFORM/LECTURE FRIDAY, APRIL 13

The St. Bonaventure Visiting Scholars program will help sponsor Professor Abraham Ferraro as he performs Friday April 13.

Professor Ferraro will be greeting interested persons from 1:30-2:30 p.m. as he conducts his “Signature Piece” in the QCA third floor space, The Loft.

At the core of the Signature Piece is a drawing machine that converts a signature, repeated ad nauseam, into circular drawings. The signatures are collected on a roll of paper and build in an ever increasing pile. The drawings run the gambit from a collection of random scribbles to cohesive tie-dye like designs. This piece confronts the notion that Art has become synonymous with an artist’s signature to then be repeated ad nauseam. Another important aspect is that of punishment, through repetitive writing, and is a popular misconception in art.

At 2:45 p.m., Professor Ferraro will be giving a lecture titled “A World of Art”. The talk is open to the public and it will be an option to the Clare 401 students as a plenary, also taking place in the QCA third floor space, The Loft.

Abraham is a contemporary visual artist on staff at the College of St. Rose in Albany, NY. Learn more at www.youtube.com/abeZart.

As the artist writes:
“My Art is about Art. Through real sweat, my performance work details the struggles, trials, and tribulations that artists undergo to create Art. Whether I am getting punched in the face by my contraption, climbing an endless Sisyphean treadmill, or cranking my way up a 20 foot tall Pencil my Art depicts the artist in the midst of creation and each performance yields a piece of Art. I frequently adopt the strategies and techniques of Art historical movements in order to both mock and pay tribute to them. My objects mix whimsy, humor, and sarcasm, but at the root of the joke one finds a deadpan seriousness.”

"ENOUGH IS ENOUGH" WEEK AT SBU

During the week of April 16th, 2012, SBU will participate in Enough is Enough week. Other college campuses across the country will also speak out, engage in dialogue, and take action to stem the tide of societal violence.

Not only did the “tipping point” tragedies at Columbine High School and Virginia Tech both occur in this month, but on the other end of the spectrum, April is “National Give Life Month.” It is our goal as we plan activities for “Enough is Enough” Week, to incorporate elements along this whole spectrum –from remembrance to proactive engagement in life-affirming and community-building activities.

What is Enough is Enough?

The Enough is Enough Campaign is a collaboration designed to create a new paradigm for peace and safety on the nation’s campuses – elementary through postsecondary – by addressing the societal violence that has contributed to unprecedented violence in some of the very places our students should feel most safe.

At a 2008 Annual Conference of Student Life Administrators, Dr. Z. Hikes, vice president of student affairs at Virginia Tech, told those in attendance what happened and what was learned through the tragedy on her campus, as well as what she thought those in student affairs needed to do to chart a course for the future. Dr. Hikes reminded those in attendance that none are immune to terror, and that all must prepare for the unimaginable. Declaring, "Enough is Enough," Dr. Hikes called on us to act with a "fierce urgency" and stem the tide of societal violence on our nation's campuses. (Visit www.EnoughisEnoughcampaign.org to view a video or the speech.) Born from this call to action, the "Enough is Enough" Campaign seeks to address the most pressing shared issue for all levels of education today – the rising societal violence that results in school and campus tragedies.

SUMMER JOB OPPORTUNITY – MENTOR

St. Bonaventure University, through a grant from the U.S. Department of State, will again host a five-week summer program for 20 students from Venezuela, Colombia, and Ecuador. The program will introduce participants to American history, government, politics, and culture, providing them with the skills and experiences necessary to understand American society. The program runs from July 7 to August 11. Mentor training will take place several days prior to the start of the program.

The mentors serve as role models and educators. It is crucial for the staff to function effectively as a team to facilitate educational, cultural, personal development, and social activities for participants.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to: participate fully in academic, leadership, and social activities; facilitate the participants’ transition into the program; display a high level of motivation; maintain a positive and mature attitude; function well in a structured, fast-paced environment; assist in planning social activities; respond to the needs of the participants. Some travel is required.

An interest in international studies, politics, American culture and history, and/or South American culture is a plus. Familiarity with Spanish language, experience coordinating program activities, and familiarity with using online technology (Moodle) in an educational/professional context are preferred but not mandatory. Preference will be given to applicants with a driver’s license and the ability to drive University vehicles.

These positions require an abundant amount of time, energy, motivation, and maturity. Due to the high demand of the positions, mentors cannot be enrolled in summer classes or hold other positions during their employment period. Mentors will be required to live in residence with the group and must be available for the entire program. There is a generous salary for this position.

Please submit a resume with updated contact information, a letter stating the reasons for your interest in the position and your qualifications, and the names of three references, no later than Friday, April 20, to Melissa Yaworsky in the Office of Admissions or at myaworsk@sbu.edu. Interviews will begin on Tuesday, April 24. For more information, please contact Melissa Yaworsky at myaworsk@sbu.edu or Dr. Maddalena Marinari at mmarinar@sbu.edu. Only those selected for interviews will be contacted.

GOLF ANYONE?

Openings are available in the Wednesday afternoon St. Bonaventure Golf League, which begins play May 16 at the St. Bonaventure Golf Course.

The league is a handicapped league, with twosomes facing off each Wednesday into August (except for July 4). The dates of June 27 and Aug. 15 are set aside for fun-filled four-person scrambles, with prizes ranging from Caribbean cruises to golf socks. (Well, the socks part is correct.) The first week of league play is used to establish handicaps, or modify handicaps for returning golfers.

There are no established tee times for matches, but the league needs to tee off between 3:30 and 4:15 p.m.

If you are interested in playing, please email Tom Missel at tmissel@sbu.edu before May 2. Even if you don't have a partner, but would like to play, we will try find another single to pair you up with.
