St. Bonaventure University is also a certified education training provider for the New York State Office of Alcoholism and Substance Abuse Services  (OASES) Two three credit courses that meet the full 85-hour requirement of the Education & Training Compliance Protocols, Section One, for the Credentialing of Alcoholism and Substance Abuse Counselors  [CASAC] credential are offered.

When you select SBU for your program of study, you are selecting a New York State (usny.nysed.govprofessionals) registered program. Students who have successfully completed the Community Mental Health Track are eligible to apply for their Mental Health Counselor license. CACREP logo Students in the School Counseling Track may apply for their provisional certification in School Counseling. Students in the Community Mental Health Track may also pursue a thesis when they select the M.S. degree option.  School students in the advanced certificate of study program can take the necessary courses en route to their permanent certification in School Counseling.

The Counseling Program offers a traditional late afternoon-night format on the Olean Campus, while the Buffalo Center offers a weekend program at the Hilbert campus. Class sizes on both campuses are small, allowing for individualized attention, and advisement in regard to your plan of study. Full time faculty members teach on both campuses.

You are provided with a sound theoretical foundation in counseling, as well as extensive hands-on field experiences, which are further described in the Counselor Education Program Handbook.

Graduates in the Mental Health Counseling Track are employed in a gamut of positions, such as mental health, college, forensics, law enforcement, addictions, vocational, and social service settings. In addition to school counselor positions, alumni in the School Counseling Track have been employed in administrative roles such as principals and superintendents, after obtaining the appropriate administrative certification. Alumni positions and accolades are outlined in our program brochure.

Our Counselor Education Handbook provides additional information.
