Awards for Seniors

The Department of Mathematics recognizes excellence among St. Bonaventure mathematics students with two awards: The Mathematics Award and the Myra J. Reed Award. Students are eligible for awards in the year in which their primary cohort graduates. Typically, this will be the fourth year of study and the year in which they complete their Senior Comprehensive Project.

The Mathematics Award

The Mathematics Award is given to the senior who, upon the recommendation of the Department of Mathematics, has demonstrated general excellence in mathematics throughout their undergraduate career. Prior to 1995, The Mathematics Award was called The Mathematics Medal.

The department will consider students who have met the following criteria for the Mathematics Award.

  1. All requirements for the major, including the Senior Comprehensive Project (or its equivalent), are completed by the end of the academic year.
  2. The student’s GPA in mathematics courses numbered 200 or above is at least 3.25.
  3. The student’s overall GPA is at least 3.25.

Students who will have met the first criterion, but only one of the second and third criteria, will be considered for an Honorable Mention. Students who will have completed the requirements for a mathematics minor and will have met the second and third criteria will also be considered for an Honorable Mention.

In addition to the criteria stated above, the student’s performance in mathematics courses and on the Senior Comprehensive Project, level of participation in departmental activities, and potential for future work in mathematics will be considered.

Meeting the relevant criteria does NOT guarantee receipt of the Mathematics Award or the Honorable Mention. The award winner(s) are chosen by the department from among the available candidates and the faculty may choose not to grant an award in any given year. In extraordinary cases, the department may choose to recognize a student who does not meet the relevant criteria stated above.

The Myra J. Reed Award

The Myra J. Reed Award is granted, upon the recommendation of the Department of Mathematics, to the senior members of the campus Pi Mu Epsilon Chapter who have demonstrated general excellence in mathematics and who have provided exemplary service to the Chapter. Myra Reed was a member of the SBU mathematics faculty until she passed away in 1986. The award that bears her name honors the excellence that Myra embodied as a teacher, a mentor, and a colleague. Prior to 1988, the Myra J. Reed Award was called the Pi Mu Epsilon Award.
