This page is for faculty members in the School of Arts & Sciences who are considering inviting a student to participate in the SRCE Exposition.
If you mentored/are mentoring a student or a group of students on a substantial project…
- for which the work occurred in the summer of 2012 or the academic year 2012/2013, and
- the work was meritorious, and
- the work could be summarized on a 40" by 30" poster,
please invite the student(s) to participate in the 2013 Exposition. Honors projects, student research projects, independent studies, and course projects are all welcome. Note that presentation formats other than posters, but similar to posters, are also welcome. In the recent Expositions, several students displayed paintings or drawings. By accepting an invitation to the Expo, a student agrees to be present at the reception. If a student or group of students accepts your invitation, please email the following information to the organizer of the Expo, Dr. Chris Hill (chill@sbu.edu):
- name(s) and year(s) of the student(s);
- the number (one or two) of posters the student or group of students will present;
- the title of the project (if known at the time);
- any specials needs the student(s) may have for their project (e.g., a small table to hold a book, papers, or a laptop);
- whether your student(s) will attend both the Expo and the Scholarship Luncheon (a brief description of the Scholarship Luncheon is provided below).
Thank you for helping to identify excellence among our students. The Expo celebrates not only the student participants, but also their faculty mentors.
THE DEADLINE FOR SUBMITTING NAMES of participants to Dr. Hill is two weeks prior to the reception.
The Barbara Carr McKee Scholarship Luncheon
The Scholarship Luncheon is another showcase for student excellence, which is held one week before the SRCE Exposition's reception. While the Expo features posters summarizing superb work by students in the Arts & Sciences, the Scholarship Luncheon showcases excellent projects in virtually any format by students in any of the four schools of SBU. A student may be invited to both events. For more information about The Luncheon, visit The Scholarship Luncheon online or contact its organizer, Kathleen Ryan (kryan@sbu.edu, 716-375-2308).
FAQ by Faculty Mentors
| 1. |
I know of student who did a wonderful project in one of my classes, but I wouldn't say that I "mentored" the student. Is the project appropriate for the Expo? |
| |
Yes, provided the project is substantial and can be summarized on a 40" by 30" poster. (I rely on you to determine whether the project is "substantial".) The creation and grading of a substantial project is an important form of "mentoring". |
| 2. |
I know of a student who completed an REU (Research Experience for Undergraduates) or an internship at another university. Is this "project" appropriate for the Expo? |
| |
Yes. Although the project was completed elsewhere, undoubtedly SBU faculty directed the student to the REU/internship, which is a form of mentoring. The 2008 Expo featured two projects from REUs and three from internships. |
| 3. |
The student's work would be a great fit for the Expo and could have been part of the last Expo, but it wasn't completed in time. Could the student present his/her project at the next Expo, even though the work was done during the previous academic year? |
| |
Yes. As a matter of fact, two of the projects that will appear at the 2010 Expo were completed during the 2008/2009 academic year, but due to circumstances beyond the students' control, could not be presented at the 2009 Expo. |
| 4. |
The student's work is a paper (or other type of project that does not lend itself to a visual summary on a poster). Is the project appropriate for the Expo? |
| |
No. The Expo is for posters and similar visual formats. However, the project would likely be appropriate for the Scholarship Luncheon, which is a showcase for student excellence that has no constraints on project formats. Contact Kathleen Ryan. |
