Caña Dulce y Caña Brava will showcase the music, poetry, dance and traditional attire of Veracruz, Mexico, in a performance at 3 p.m. Sunday, April 7, at St. Bonaventure University’s Regina A. Quick Center for the Arts.

It is the eighth and final performance in the 2023-2024 Friends of Good Music performance season at the Quick Center.

A special school day performance will be held at 10 a.m. Monday, April 8. Tickets for both performances are available. 

Formed in 2007, Caña Dulce y Caña Brava is an artistic project that highlights feminine poetry and voices, and that carries the seal of feminine strength and beauty within the traditionally masculine world of son jarocho, a traditional style of music originating from Veracruz.

Composed of performers with years of experience on national and international stages, the group takes audiences on a voyage through multiple rhythms, accompanied by traditional string instruments such as the harp, jarana, guitarra grande, as well as percussion and zapateado.

The sounds of the strings interweave with the poetic messages written from a woman’s perspective, while the band’s colorful wardrobe embellishes their performance.

Caña Dulce y Caña Brava has performed in several Mexican states as well as in the United States, Turkey, South Africa, Canada, South Korea, Jamaica, Guyana, Venezuela, Denmark, Portugal, and France. They have released two albums on the Fonarte Latino label and are working on a third.

Single tickets for this concert are $20 at full price, $16 for senior citizens and St. Bonaventure employees, and $5 for students. For tickets and information, call The Quick Center at (716) 375-2494.

For each Friends of Good Music performance, The Quick Center will open its galleries one hour before the performance and keep them open through intermission. Regular gallery hours are noon to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday, and noon to 4 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.
