Hometown: Fremont, Calif. Major: Biology (George Washington University School of Medicine)
When it comes to finding one’s comfort zone in the foreign world of college, Neil Almeida discovered that being in the Honors Program definitely has its perks.
“The first thing I learned about was honors housing,” said Almeida. “I thought it would be cool to room with like-minded individuals.” He soon discovered that he was right.
“I have a lot of classes with people on the same floor and it’s a calmer atmosphere, which is good. I made a lot of good new friends, and a lot of them are bio majors like me.”
Once he was settled into his honors residence hall, Almeida was able to explore some of the other opportunities the program offers, including talks and shows that honors students attend for free. He is especially excited about the classes in the Honors Program, for instance. He has only taken one honors course so far (Honors Intellectual Journey), but the experience was such an engaging one that he is looking forward to more.
“St. Bonaventure already has a very small student-professor ratio, but this class was about 12 students and one professor,” Almeida said. “There was a lot of discussion and a lot of interaction, and you really got to know everyone’s viewpoint. It wasn’t really lecture-based. We’d read the text, and then we would discuss. I think that’s an honors course theme: There’s a lot of interaction. I’m sure there are some courses that we’re going to take down the road that are going to be pretty interesting, so I’m looking forward to taking those.”
When he’s not engaging in the challenge of his classes (and, being in both the Honors Program and the Early Assurance Program with The George Washington University School of Medicine, the challenge is certainly significant), Almeida, a big Lakers fan, likes to play basketball, and he can often be found cheering on the Bonnies in the Reilly Center Arena.
When it’s really time to wind down, though, he enjoys relaxing with his friends, listening to music, and, of course, keeping up to date on his favorite teams using the ESPN app.
