Wittmeyer moderates panel at NYS Convenience Stores convention

Dr. Carol Wittmeyer, associate professor of management in St. Bonaventure University’s School of Business, served as moderator for a family business panel Carol Wittmeyerdiscussion at the New York State Association of Convenience Stores Trade Show and Convention.

Held May 15 at the Oncenter in Syracuse, the panel included Michael Newman, executive vice president of NOCO Inc.; Joseph Mirabito, CEO of Mirabito Energy Products; and Mark Byrne, executive vice president of Byrne Dairy and president of SonByrne Sales Inc.

“It was a pleasure to work with Mike and Joe, who are humble leaders of successful multi-generational family firms in our region,” Wittmeyer said. “They shared their stories related to the three success factors we know are critical to family business transitions: governing boards, strategic planning and family meetings.”

Also, Wittmeyer is serving as strategic planning consultant to the New York Family Business Center, a not-for-profit newly located at the Madden School at LeMoyne College. 

“It’s a real honor to work with Upstate family businesses and another Catholic institution committed to our partnership of serving families in business in Upstate New York,” she said. “Such partnerships help the many students on all of our campuses who look forward to running their own family firms.”

As part of her sabbatical, Wittmeyer will serve as a professor in residence at Ellicott Development in June.  She will work with Chairman Carl Paladino, ’68, to complete a case study of the enterprise they drafted with the late Patrick Paladino and Dr. John G. Watson, former dean of SBU’s School of Business.

She will attend meetings at the company to get current business experiences and offer management training for staff.

Effective managers are strong organizers, planners, problem-solvers and motivators who can help a business or organization compete and succeed.

Management is an ideal major for grooming the corporate generalist. It develops decision-makers who are well equipped with a broad knowledge of all areas of business including accounting, business information systems, finance, marketing and economics. Management majors pursue a curriculum that emphasizes courses in these core areas.

They may also choose an emphasis in behavioral management (motivation, conflict, group dynamics) or quantitative management (statistics, models, computer simulations).

Four concentrations are available to management majors:
  • Family Business
  • Entrepreneurship
  • Global Business Management
  • Human Resource Management
Each concentration requires a major to take 9 credits as management electives. (See Curriculum & Courses page.)

Students may also minor in management. (See Minors in Business.)

Careers in Management

Management majors are well-equipped for career opportunities in a variety of businesses and not-for-profit organizations, such as human resources management, organizational development, production and operations management, sales and retail management; and supervisory positions in many fields including manufacturing, education, government and non-profit entities.

Other job opportunities exist in the areas of international business, purchasing, urban planning, health care administration, and plant management.

Additionally, quantitative and computer-related courses provide a solid foundation for careers in system analysis, business information systems, marketing research, and materials management and planning.

    John Stevens
    School of Business

    John Stevens, management lecturer, received the 2016 Distinguished Service Award from Leadership Cattaraugus during the organization’s annual dinner in December. In presenting the award, board member Jesse Gugino stated that Stevens has given 13 years of dedicated service to Leadership Cattaraugus. Stevens was one of the founders of Leadership Cattaraugus, meeting monthly to develop the program starting in 2003 and launching it 2004. He served as the LC board president for many years, and has been a board member since the program was founded. He volunteers at the Opening Retreat, Leadership Day and serves on the Curriculum Committee. Gugino said, “John is a valuable asset to the Board of Directors, his tireless service and commitment to Leadership Cattaraugus makes him an outstanding candidate for this award.” Dr. Matrecia James, dean of the School of Business, gave the keynote address during the annual dinner and celebration that marked graduation day for Leadership Cattaraugus’ Class of 2016.
