Michael J. Fischer, Ph.D., was named Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs in 2006, following a distinguished teaching and administrative career at St. Bonaventure that began in 1985.
A native of Buffalo, N.Y., Provost Fischer earned his BS and MBA degrees from the State University of New York at Buffalo and his Ph.D. in business administration from The Pennsylvania State University.
The Provost and VP for Academic Affairs is the second-highest ranking administrator of the University after President Sr. Margaret Carney, O.S.F., S.T.D. The Office of the Provost oversees all academic areas of the University as well as a range of services and programs including enrollment management, student life, and intercollegiate athletics.
Provost Fischer has engineered the University’s strategic planning process. He is guiding the University through the important stages of this planning process designed to ensure that St. Bonaventure University continues to distinguish itself as an institution in which students are mentored in extraordinary learner-centered environments.
Fischer lives in the nearby village of Allegany with his wife, Carol, also a professor at the University, and their three children, Katie, Mark, and Claire. His favorite place to relax when away from campus is at Chautauqua Lake, in far western New York.
