The St. Bonaventure University community is suffering the loss of a dear family member, Tyler S. Davis, a sophomore history major from Rochester, N.Y.
Davis’ body was found by Cattaraugus County Sherriff’s Department investigators on Sunday following an investigation that began on Saturday, Nov. 23.
While the investigation continues, officials are treating this as an accidental death. Davis was last seen departing an off-campus house around midnight on Saturday, Nov. 23. He was reported missing by his roommate around 6 p.m. on Saturday.
The university hosted a prayer service on Sunday, after word of Davis’ death was confirmed. University president Sr. Margaret Carney, O.S. F., asked for thoughts and prayers for the Davis family and friends.
While the investigation continues, university officials are continuing to cooperate with police officials in the investigation.
The university’s Wellness Center and University Ministries staff remain available to counsel students at both the Wellness Center in Doyle Hall and the University Ministries offices, located in the Thomas Merton Center.
Rick Trietley, vice president for student affairs, said the university is focused now on ministering to the students and family members who are most directly affected by this tragedy. The university will host a memorial service for Davis after the Thanksgiving break, which starts at the close of classes on Tuesday, Nov. 26.
“We are so deeply saddened by this turn of events,” said Trietley. “We are a very close community, so when something like this happens, the effect is magnified because we all view each other as family.”
Funeral arrangements for Tyler Davis have been finalized. Calling hours will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday, Nov. 29, at Bishop & Johnson Funeral Home, 285 Main St., Hornell. A funeral Mass is scheduled for 11 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 30, at St. Ann's Church, 27 Erie Ave., Hornell.
