St. Bonaventure University will host this week nearly two dozen members of Franciscan religious communities who serve as board trustees. Sponsored by the Association of Franciscan Colleges and Universities, the three-day “Trusteeship as Ministry” workshop is scheduled for Thursday through Saturday and is designed to help Franciscan religious who serve as trustees on boards of colleges, hospitals, secondary schools and service agencies.
“Attending this workshop is a wonderful opportunity to enter into relationship with other religious board members, gain some insight into particular responsibilities, and recognize the importance of empowering lay men and women who share a passion for sponsored ministries,” said Sr. Joanne Schatzlein, O.S.F., director of the Office of Corporate Ministries for the Sisters of St. Francis of Assisi.
Sr. Joanne is among those who will lead workshop sessions. Others scheduled to speak include:
“It is increasingly important for religious to understand and embrace the importance of an appointment to boards that govern ecclesial ministries founded by our congregations and provinces,” said Sr. Margaret.
“Board service, while voluntary, is a significant form of public responsibility for an institution’s welfare. … To be called to such service is a privilege. It is also hard work and great responsibility. The workshop will address these issues and provide assistance to those holding such appointments.”
