The members of the Wind Soloists of New York are among the most esteemed wind players in the United States. All have extensive performance histories and have collectively performed with a wide variety of major orchestras and chamber groups. This special program with four winds – flute, oboe, clarinet, bassoon – features works by Debussy and Mozart. Fresh from appearances in Los Angeles, Philadelphia and Washington, DC, the Wind Soloists of New York open the 29th season of Good Music in Olean.

Salsa is an American music genre amalgamated by the Puerto Ricans in Spanish Harlem of New York City. The Puerto Rican migration become the major adherent of Afro-Cuban and Afro-Puerto Rican music, readily absorbing new elements without losing any of the music’s identifying factors. The program presents instruments, music, and lyrics used in the African, Taino and Spanish Catholic rituals that provide a base for Salsa. Jose Obando, the Salsa Consultant for the Musical Instrument Department of The Metropolitan Museum of Art, and his musicians perform a concert which will make the audience want to dance!

Founded in 1999 in Germany, this a-cappella quintet embodies the rich choral tradition of Leipzig, the city so closely associated with Bach and Mendelssohn. What captivates critics and audiences is not only the group’s riveting stage presence and sublime technique but also a diverse repertoire conveyed with great respect, joy and fun. Calmus programs seamlessly link works by the renaissance and baroque masters with great German romantic works, as well as contemporary pieces and popular songs.

This eclectic improvisational ensemble is comprised of some of New York’s leading jazz artists. The group combines influences ranging from jazz and classical to blues and world music. Led by Dave Schroeder, the director of the Jazz Studies Program at New York University, and featuring among others Lenny Picket, the musical director for NBC’s Saturday Night Live, the band will perform some of their original compositions from their latest CD “Nouveau Sketches” interspersed with their own arrangements of beloved Holiday songs.

Their catalog of over 30 CD’s has won numerous awards. The program will include Tchaikovsky’s passionate masterpiece Serenade for Strings, op. 48.

The Bay State Winds, provides musical support for a wide variety of military and civilian functions, and presents concert tours across the Northeast since 2001. Drawing on years of professional experience, these four accomplished musicians present an exciting and polished program that will appeal to audiences young and old alike. The group’s repertoire features something for all musical tastes: classical, contemporary, patriotic, as well as original pieces for clarinet quartet. THIS PROGRAM IS FREE AND OPEN TO THE PUBLIC.

Three women plus twelve instruments equals one good time when Simple Gifts takes the stage. Drawing on an impressive variety of ethnic folk styles, this award-winning trio plays everything from lively Irish jigs and down-home American reels to hard-driving Klezmer frailachs and haunting Gypsy melodies, spicing the mix with the distinctive rhythms of Balkan dance music, the lush sounds of Scandinavian twin fiddling, and original compositions written in a traditional style. These women will raise the roof of the Quick Center on this return visit.

The concert of the Syracuse Symphony Orchestra has become an annual highlight of the Friends of Good Music/Quick Center performance season. Music Director Daniel Hege returns to Olean to conduct Beethoven’s Symphony No. 6 and the acclaimed violinist Corey Cerovsek performs Wieniawski’s Second Violin Concerto. An international recording star, Mr. Cerovsek has also appeared on NBC’s Tonight Show with Jay Leno and on the PBS special Musical Encounters.

Amber Wagner is a winner of the 2007 Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions Grand Finals and was featured in the documentary film The Audition which opened to audiences nationwide in 2009. L.A. Splash Magazine lauded Wagner for her “powerful and radiant voice, which carried effortlessly over the orchestra.” Already off to an international career, Miss Wagner comes to St. Bonaventure following her performances in the leading soprano role of Richard Wagner’s Lohengrin at the Lyric Opera of Chicago.
