The Daily Labor of the Early Franciscans by David Flood, O.F.M. (2010) In his early studies, Flood focused on the history of the brotherhood with special emphasis on the development of the Early Rule. Eventually, however, the social structures of early Franciscan life led to the economics of the early Franciscan movement and the importance of work in the life of Francis and his companions. Told from the vantage point of a historian, Flood leads the reader through his analysis of the early movement.

Rule of the Friars Minor, 1209-2009: Historical Perspectives, Lived Realities. (2010) Spirit and Life 14. This volume makes available the results of a unique conference held at the Franciscan Institute in April 2009 to celebrate the 800th anniversary of the founding of the Order of Friars Minor through the confirmation of the propositum vitae of the early friars by Pope Innocent III om April 16, 1209. This conference brought together for a brief but intense period of time two groups of people who do not often dialogue with each other: scholars of the Rule and practitioners of the Rule–those who study the Rule in an academic manner and those given the responsibility by their provinces of teaching and modeling the practice of the Rule in daily life. To that end, this volume presents six scholarly essays and nine interventions offered by friars from nine different areas of the globe who shared the challenges of living the Rule in diverse cultural, national and religious contexts.

Women of the Streets, Early Franciscan Women and Their Mendicant Vocation by Darleen Pryds. (2010) This book about mendicant women outside the cloister is unique in its content. Rose of Viterbo, Angela of Foligno, Margaret of Cortona, and Sancia, Queen of Naples, were all born within the first century of the Franciscan Order. As women who pursued their religious vocation of volumtary poverty, itinerancy, and preaching outside of monastic walls–in the streets and in their homes -- they could very well be called the first generation of mendicant women.

St. Bonaventure’s Defense of the Mendicants. (WSB XV) Translated by José de Vinck and Robert J. Karris, O.F.M. (2010) In twelve chapters, St. Bonaventure defends the Franciscan way of life against the attacks of Parisian Master, Gerard of Abbeville. Bonaventure clarifies the meaning of evangelical perfection, gospel poverty, and the imitation of Christ. He distinguishes different kinds of perfection and clearly indicates how the Old Testament relates to the dispensation of grace in the New Testament and how it is to be interpreted. This volume is a companion to Bonaventure’s Disputed Questions on Evangelical Perfection (WSB XIII).
