FACULTY/STAFF PHOTO SHOOT THIS FRIDAY

Faculty/Staff Photo Shoot is Friday, Sept. 7

A faculty/staff photo shoot will be held from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Friday, Sept. 7, in the Athletics Hall of Fame in the Reilly Center. Craig Melvin, chief photographer for the Bonnies and for the Buffalo Bills, will conduct the session.

This is a great opportunity for new faculty and staff members to get a professional head-and-shoulders photo taken and for veteran employees to update their photos.

The session is free and no appointment is necessary.

Photos are kept on file for use as needed by University Relations.

QUICK CENTER OPENS SEASON WITH PRIZE-WINNING SINGERS

The winners of the St. Bonaventure Performance Prize of the 2012 Liederkranz Competition – Stephanie Lauricella, mezzo-soprano, and Samuel Levine, tenor – will open the concert season at The Regina A. Quick Center for the Arts with a program entitled "From new York to Buffalo" on Friday, Sept. 7, 2012, accompanied by Elizabeth Hastings, music director of the Liederkranz Foundation.

Stephanie Lauricella, mezzo-soprano, has performed with the Pittsburgh Opera and also with the Pittsburgh Symphony.

Samuel Levine, tenor, is a recent graduate of the Yale Opera Studio. He made his international debut at the 2009 Wexford Festival in Ireland and has performed with Opera Theatre of St. Louis, Chicago Opera Theater, and the Aspen Music Festival.

In the first half of the program Ms. Lauricella and Mr. Levine will sing opera arias including their prize winning arias from the Liederkranz Competition, and after intermission will perform a selection of musical theater and cabaret-style songs from the New York stages in opening the Quick Center’s theme for 2012/13: Celebrate New York!

STUDENT BONATHON CALLERS NEEDED

The Annual Giving Office is seeking freshmen, sophomores, and juniors who are enthusiastic, energetic professionals to work for the Bonathon. Student callers serve as ambassadors of St. Bonaventure calling alumni, parents, and friends of the University to secure pledges and gifts for the Bonaventure Fund.Callers must be articulate and are required to work two shifts per week.

Calling shifts are:

1 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 9 p.m. Sunday
6:30 to 9 p.m. Monday through Wednesday

The hourly pay rate is $8. Applications are being accepted in person from 8:30 a.m. to noon and 1 to 4 p.m. Sept. 6 through Sept. 12, in Room G5, located in the basement of Francis Hall.

BONARESPONDS MEETING TODAY

There will be a short BonaResponds meeting at 4:30 p.m. today in Murphy 105 to discuss our efforts to help the animals at the Cattaraugus County SPCA.

This Saturday and Sunday, we will be going to Salamanca and Arcade. In Salamanca, we will be painting the home of an elderly woman. In Arcade, we will continue to clear a pasture for rescued horses.

HEOP TUTORS NEEDED

The Higher Education Opportunity Program is in need of additional tutors for the Fall 2012 semester.

We are seeking tutors for all courses and levels. Each tutor meets with each of his or her students at least twice a week for an hour. The pay is $7.25 per hour for undergraduates and $8 per hour for graduate students.

CANTICLE FARM FARMSTAND

The Canticle Farm farmstand is open from 2 to 6 p.m., Tuesdays and Fridays. The Canticle Farm is located at 8835 S. Nine Mile Road in Allegany. Vegetables available this week include regular and Sungold tomatoes, carrots, potatoes, garlic, baby beets with greens, onions, beans, summer squash, mesclun mix, lettuce heads and Swiss chard.

Also available are grains, honey, and maple syrup. Eggs will be delivered on Fridays only for the next few weeks.

Fall shares are still available. Applications are available in the barn, at the stand, farm market and on the website, www.canticlefarm.org.

Heavenly Harvest is from noon to 4 p.m., this Sunday, Sept. 9. Admission tickets may be purchased at the stand and the distribution center at the Farm, the Olean Farmers’ Market, or by calling the office at 716-373-0200, ext. 3358.

AUTHOR, EDUCATOR LOUANNE JOHNSON TO VISIT SBU

Author and educator LouAnne Johnson will visit St. Bonaventure for a Monday, Sept. 10, program titled “The Power of Choice.” Her address, which will focus on the power of student choice, begins at 7 p.m. in the auditorium of the William F. Walsh Science Center on campus.

The program, free and open to the public, is sponsored by the university’s Clare College, School of Education, the Visiting Scholars Committee, and the Council for Exceptional Children.

Johnson is a former U.S. Navy journalist, Marine Corps officer and high school teacher. She is the author of 10 books, including the international bestseller “Dangerous Minds,” the award-winning young adult novel “Muchacho,” and “Teaching Outside the Box: How to Grab Your Students by Their Brains.”

Michelle Pfeiffer starred in the August 1995 box office hit “Dangerous Minds,” which was based on Johnson’s book (original title “My Posse Don’t Do Homework”).

Because of student demand, University Ministries is adding a 4 p.m. Saturday Vigil Mass to our Mass schedule. This Saturday, Sept. 8, we will meet in the Chapel of St. Clare for our First Vigil Mass. All students, faculty and staff are welcome.
