DEFINING OUR LEGACY BOOKS ON SALE FRIDAY AND DURING BONAGANY

Did you miss your chance to purchase one of the keepsake "A Legacy Defined" Books at the end of last year? You will have another chance this Friday and Saturday: Friday you can purchase them from 12 to 2:30 p.m. in the Hickey Dining Hall. On Saturday, you can purchase them from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the SGA table at Bonagany.

The books are on sale for $20 and part of the proceeds go towards on campus clubs in affiliation with SGA.

“A Legacy Defined” — a collection of 139 photos and 11 stories on the NCAA Tournament seasons of the men’s and women’s basketball teams at the university last year.

SGA FRESHMEN ELECTION FORMS DUE FRIDAY

Freshmen interested in running for a position in the St. Bonaventure Student Government Association are reminded their petition forms are due by 4 p.m., Friday, Sept. 21, in the Campus Activities Office, RC 208. Interested students can find blank forms on www.my.sbu.edu. Click the student tab once you are logged in and then click the SGA Information tab.

Elections will be held Monday, Oct. 1 through Friday, Oct. 5. Election results will be announced Wednesday, Oct. 10. Any questions can be directed to sga@sbu.edu.

AES ENGINEERS SCHOLARSHIP DEADLINE APPROACHING

AES Engineers scholarship deadline is less than a month away. We will be awarding $500 to the winner(s) each year. Scholarship deadline is Oct. 5.

Application Process Students will submit an essay on one of the two topics that appear on the scholarship page of our web site http://www.aesengineers.com/scholarships.htm.

UNITED WAY FUNDRAISING CAMPAIGN — FACT #5

CANTICLE FARM STAND

The Canticle Farm stand is open from from 2 to 6 p.m., Tuesdays and Fridays. The farm is located at 3835 S. Nine Mile Road in Allegany, NY. Vegetables available this week include regular and Sungold tomatoes, carrots, potatoes, garlic, baby beets with greens, onions, beans, summer squash, mesclun mix, lettuce mix, sweet peppers, kale, mini-onions, shallots and Swiss chard. Other local items available are grains, honey and maple syrup. Eggs will be delivered on Fridays only.

Fall shares are still available. Applications are in the barn, at the stand, market and on the Website, www.canticlefarm.org.

Visit the Olean farmers’ market from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturdays located on the JCC parking lot.

FAMILY BUSINESS CLUB EVENT

The Family Business Club is sponsoring an event at 6 p.m. today in Murphy 107. A young alumnus, Blake Tarana, will be coming to discuss his family's business, Tim Horton's.

The event is open to anyone of all majors and backgrounds. There will be a brief meeting to discuss Family Business Club trips and information following the event.

BONARESPONDS USED SHOES AND COATS COLLECTION

Is your family coming to campus for Family Weekend? Have them bring up shoes and coats that you no longer wear. BonaResponds is collecting shoes for Soles4Souls and coats for homeless shelters in Buffalo and Texas.

The collections will end on Sept. 29, as part of the WarmSnugglyBlanket Blanket making day where volunteers will make over 100 blankets for people with cancer.

COLIN BEARER WINS CONSTITUTION DAY JEOPARDY

Colin Bearer, senior History major and Political Science minor, is the first Constitution Day Jeopardy champion. Congratulations, Colin! He won free textbooks for next semester.

Tyler Piriano came in second place and won $100 Bona Bucks and Mariah Wolford won $50 Bona Bucks for third place.

$10 Bona Bucks door prizes were won by Elizabeth Smith, Daulton Sherwin, Jasmine Mangum, Azarias Perez, Matt Zaros, Michael Gargano, Sarah Schweiger, Joseph Hayes, Christina Zoppi, and Shakira Hite.

STATE FIRE SAFETY INSPECTION STARTS OCT. 1, 2012

The annual SBU New York State Campus Fire Safety Inspection will commence on Monday, Oct. 1, 2012. The inspection will be very thorough and encompasses every building on campus and a random sampling of rooms within each building. The inspection is concentrated heavily on work areas, residence halls and living quarters. It is expected to last approximately two weeks at a minimum.

Some key areas to pay close attention to are listed below:

Smoking—Smoking is banned in any campus building.

Fire Doors—Fire doors are to be closed when rooms are not occupied. Fire doors are any door with a door closer.

Extension Cords—The use of extension cords are banned except for contractor or temporary devices.

Daisy Chained Power Strips—Power strips are to be plugged directly into the wall and not connected to each other.

Multi Plug Taps/or Blocks—The use of electrical plug splitters without a built in surge protector is prohibited.

Exit Signs—All exit signs should be lit with an unobstructed view.

Obstructions of Egress—Do not block exit pathways. All exits should be cleared of trip hazards.

Buildup of Combustible Materials—Cardboard and trash should be removed from common areas. No combustibles stored within 18-24 inches from the ceilings

Holiday Lighting—No holiday lighting is permitted is to be up at this time.

Candles—The use or position of candles is prohibited in any campus building unless in a zone authorized for religious ceremony. Battery powered electric candles are okay.

Storing Combustible Fuels—Please remove any charcoal lighters, propane tanks, charcoal starters or stored quantity of lighting fluids from your building. Gas or gas operated devices are prohibited from inside buildings unless stored in an authorized garage area.

Campus Community Members—Are expected to be familiar with basic fire safety and evacuation procedures for their area.

FELLOWSHIP OPPORTUNITY IN GERMANY

The Congress-Bundestag Youth Exchange program is a one-year paid fellowship for graduates of U.S. undergraduate institutions. Application cycle for 2013-14 is now open at http://www.usagermanyscholarship.org. Students live, work, and study in Germany; no prior German language study is required.

The program is funded by the US Dept of State and the German government. Students in all academic areas are eligible with preference to business, science, engineering, and technology, and who have had some course-related work experience/internship.

The program includes a two-month intensive German language training program, a full semester of study at a German university, and a five-month internship with a German company. All expenses for the 12-month program are covered under the terms of the fellowship.

NEW RELEASE FROM FRANCISCAN INSTITUTE PUBLICATIONS

Franciscan Institute Publications announces the Sept. 15, 2012, release of St. Bonaventure’s "Commentary on the Gospel of Luke: Thirty Days of Reflection and Prayer" by Robert J. Karris, O.F.M.

From his work on translating and annotating St. Bonaventure’s three-volume "Commentary on Luke’s Gospel," noted Scripture scholar Robert Karris has developed this book of reflections for thirty days.

FREEMAN-ASIA SCHOLARSHIP: SPRING 2013

Freeman-ASIA provides scholarships for U.S. undergraduate students with demonstrated financial need to study abroad in East or Southeast Asia. Applicants should have a minimum 2.8 GPA. The program's goal is to increase the number of Americans with firsthand exposure to and understanding of Asia and its peoples and cultures. Awards of up to $5,000 are available for spring programs. Award recipients are required to share their experiences with their home campuses or communities to encourage study abroad by others.
