STUDY ABROAD: NON-ENGLISH SPEAKING DESTINATIONS Students interested in learning about semester study abroad opportunities in non-English speaking locations are invited to attend an information session today at 4 p.m., in Reilly Center 211-213. Details about the more than 30 cities worldwide in Greece, Morocco, Spain, Italy, Argentina, China, and others will be offered, highlighting foreign language immersion. Language requirements, optional language courses, semester credits in foreign language and other courses available in English will be presented. Past participants will be available to share their experiences and answer program-specific questions. See www.sbu.edu/intstudies to view the list of countries/cities where SBU offers pre-approved programs. This program counts as a Freshman Passport option.

STATE FIRE SAFETY INSPECTION STARTS OCT. 1, 2012 The annual SBU New York State Campus Fire Safety Inspection will commence on Monday, Oct. 1, 2012. The inspection will be very thorough and encompasses every building on campus and a random sampling of rooms within each building. The inspection is concentrated heavily on work areas, residence halls and living quarters. It is expected to last approximately two weeks at a minimum. Some key areas to pay close attention to are listed below: Smoking—Smoking is banned in any campus building. Fire Doors—Fire doors are to be closed when rooms are not occupied. Fire doors are any door with a door closer. Extension Cords—The use of extension cords are banned except for contractor or temporary devices. Daisy Chained Power Strips—Power strips are to be plugged directly into the wall and not connected to each other. Multi Plug Taps/or Blocks—The use of electrical plug splitters without a built in surge protector is prohibited. Exit Signs—All exit signs should be lit with an unobstructed view. Obstructions of Egress—Do not block exit pathways. All exits should be cleared of trip hazards. Buildup of Combustible Materials—Cardboard and trash should be removed from common areas. No combustibles stored within 18-24 inches from the ceilings Holiday Lighting—No holiday lighting is permitted is to be up at this time. Candles—The use or position of candles is prohibited in any campus building unless in a zone authorized for religious ceremony. Battery powered electric candles are okay. Storing Combustible Fuels—Please remove any charcoal lighters, propane tanks, charcoal starters or stored quantity of lighting fluids from your building. Gas or gas operated devices are prohibited from inside buildings unless stored in an authorized garage area. Campus Community Members—Are expected to be familiar with basic fire safety and evacuation procedures for their area. FELLOWSHIP OPPORTUNITY IN GERMANY The Congress-Bundestag Youth Exchange program is a one-year paid fellowship for graduates of U.S. undergraduate institutions. Application cycle for 2013-14 is now open at http://www.usagermanyscholarship.org. Students live, work, and study in Germany; no prior German language study is required. The program is funded by the US Dept of State and the German government. Students in all academic areas are eligible with preference to business, science, engineering, and technology, and who have had some course-related work experience/internship. The program includes a two-month intensive German language training program, a full semester of study at a German university, and a five-month internship with a German company. All expenses for the 12-month program are covered under the terms of the fellowship. NEW RELEASE FROM FRANCISCAN INSTITUTE PUBLICATIONS Franciscan Institute Publications announces the Sept. 15, 2012, release of St. Bonaventure’s "Commentary on the Gospel of Luke: Thirty Days of Reflection and Prayer" by Robert J. Karris, O.F.M. From his work on translating and annotating St. Bonaventure’s three-volume "Commentary on Luke’s Gospel," noted Scripture scholar Robert Karris has developed this book of reflections for thirty days. Our semester office hours will begin today. The hours are: Cody Clifford (President) - 1 to 3 p.m. Monday. The University is teaming up with the Olean General Hospital to sponsor a March of Dimes walk. The walk is scheduled for Oct. 13, and SGA sponsored clubs are encouraged to participate and do fundraising; in addition to the efforts to help infants be as healthy as possible at birth, SGA is offering a grant to the club that raises the most money. On Wednesday, Sept. 19, there is a meeting at 7 p.m. in Walsh Auditorium to explain registration and different requirements. After the registration, a fundraising campaign will be started. On Saturday, Sept. 29, we are hosting a table at Bonagany. It runs from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. We need volunteers to host the tables to sell T-shirts, sign people up for a mailing list and answer questions about Voices. Sarah Hicks
The Franciscan Passport event from 12:30 to 1:15 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 18, in the RC 211/213 is open to all. Franciscan Presence and Dialogue: Peace-Making and Inculturation in a Culture of Violence St. Francis went to meet the Sultan during the Crusades. St. Clare had an encounter with Saracens who threatened to attack the church where she was living with her sisters. In both instances, the man and woman who inspired the Franciscan movement sought peace and reconciliation, an alternative way of being with those who were “other,” different in beliefs and culture. This event will provide a closer look at their stories and its implications for life in the 21st century. Part of the Franciscan Institute Build With Living Stones Franciscan Heritage Series. Presenter: Dr. Paula Scraba, National Build With Living Stones Facilitator Pizza and refreshments will be provided. COLLEGE DEMOCRATS PLANNING SESSION The College Democrats will hold a planning session at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 20, in Plassmann 108 (the Honors classroom). The meeting is open to anyone who shares the values and interests of the national Democratic Party. CONSTITUTION DAY JEOPARDY SEMIN-FINAL COMPETITION TONIGHT The Constitution Day Jeopardy semi-final rounds will be held at 7:30 tonight in the Quick Arts Theater. FREEMAN-ASIA SCHOLARSHIP: SPRING 2013 Freeman-ASIA provides scholarships for U.S. undergraduate students with demonstrated financial need to study abroad in East or Southeast Asia. Applicants should have a minimum 2.8 GPA. The program's goal is to increase the number of Americans with firsthand exposure to and understanding of Asia and its peoples and cultures. Awards of up to $5,000 are available for spring programs. Award recipients are required to share their experiences with their home campuses or communities to encourage study abroad by others.
