BLACK HISTORY MONTH SHOW TODAY

A Los Angeles-based theatrical group will join St. Bonaventure University’s Black Student Union and Step Team for a Black History Month celebration today at the university. The program begins at 7 p.m. in The Regina A. Quick Center for the Arts and is open to the public. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. The performance will include “Portraits of Courage: African-Americans You Wish You Had Known,” an examination of overlooked African-Americans and their contributions to American history.

Surprised at the absence of African-American figures in today’s history books, playwright Colin Cox created a theatrical piece to help bring recognition to a few of those who helped shaped our country. Two actors portray historically based characters who have influenced science, civil rights, sports, the economy, the Armed Services, labor relations, education and the arts in this 65-minute stage presentation. The admission price for Monday’s program is $3, and free for SBU students.

More information on “Portraits of Courage” is available online at http://www.willandcompany.com/poc/af_am.shtml.

Sponsored by the university’s Black Student Union, Campus Activities Board and The Damietta Center.

VOLUNTEER INCOME TAX ASSISTANCE (VITA)

The tenth year of the St. Bonaventure University Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program continues at a great pace. During the first three weeks of tax season, we have prepared more than 200 tax returns, generating over $450,000 in tax refunds for Cattaraugus County workers. This brings us to a cumulative 10-year total of over 3,300 tax returns and $5.25 million in tax refunds flowing into Cattaraugus County. The St. Bonaventure VITA program operates out of the United Way office at 807 W. State Street in Olean, N.Y.

The tax office is open six days per week with a variety of morning, afternoon, and evening appointments available. Cattaraugus County workers can call 716-373-2534 to see if they qualify for the free tax service and to set an appointment. We will be offering some appointment times during Spring Break, although not our full schedule. Phone messages will be checked daily, and callers will be contacted to arrange appointments.

With five weeks to go in “tax season,” no sleep ‘til Easter Break!
