SBU TO HOST FESTIVAL OF FAITHS FEB. 7

St. Bonaventure will host a Festival of Faiths, welcoming speakers of Hindu, Muslim, Jewish and Christian faith communities.

Members of the SBU and Olean-area communities are invited to learn more about their neighbors’ religious traditions during the Thursday, Feb. 7, program, which will be held from 7 to 9 p.m. in the University Chapel.

“Moving from mere tolerance to true appreciation of the religious genius of our various faith communities is an important element of educating students to be world citizens,” said university President Sr. Margaret Carney, O.S.F. “This festival will help us strengthen our commitment to achieve that.”

Participants will be able to select two of four workshop sessions.

The following workshop leaders will discuss their traditions: Rabbi Drorah Setel of Temple Beth El in Niagara Falls and past president of the Buffalo Board of Rabbis; Fr. Francis Di Spigno, O.F.M., executive director of University Ministries, and the Rev. Dr. G. Stanford Bratton and the Rev. Xavier Mazur of the Network of Religious Communities; Zahid Y. Khairullah, Ph.D., and Durriya H. Z. Khairullah, Ph.D., members of the Islamic Society of the Southern Tier and SBU faculty members; and Yogini Kothari, D.M.D., a member of the Hindu Society of Olean-Allegany and an Olean orthodontist.

CONSTRUCTION UPDATE

This past week, LeChase construction advanced the work in the Swan Business Center interior significantly. Two of the permanent stairways have been installed and are in use. Electrical and mechanical subcontractors are at work on critical systems in the interior, and the painter has begun work on the second floor.

Over the next two weeks we expect that the scaffolding will be completed and enclosed on the west side, so that the bricklayers can work there. Installation will begin on glass interior partitions since the drywall is now all in place. Mechanical and electrical work will continue so that system checkouts can begin.

VOLUNTEER INCOME TAX ASSISTANCE (VITA)

The tenth year of the St. Bonaventure University Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program has gotten off to a great start. VITA volunteers are pleased to announce that in the first week of tax season they prepared 80 tax returns, generating $215,000 in tax refunds for Cattaraugus County workers. This brings us to a cumulative 10-year total of 3,200 tax returns and over $5,000,000 in tax refunds flowing into Cattaraugus County, including the Earned Income Credit and other valuable tax credits.

The Spring 2013 volunteers include 35 accounting upperclassmen and fifth years serving as tax preparers, and 30 accounting underclassmen serving as screeners and receptionists. All VITA volunteers are certified by IRS tests on Ethics, and the tax preparers are certified on Advanced-level tax tests. VITA program resources are provided by Cattaraugus County and the United Way.

The St. Bonaventure VITA program operates out of the United Way office at 807 W. State Street in Olean, NY. The tax office is open 6-days per week with a variety of morning, afternoon, and evening appointments available.

Cattaraugus County workers can call 716-373-2534 to see if they qualify for the free tax service and to set an appointment.

With seven weeks to go in “tax season,” no sleep ‘til Easter Break!
