THEFT PREVENTION

There have been several incidents on campus recently which involved the theft of electronic items such as gaming devices, smart phones, laptops, etc. Several of these incidents took place during times when dorm rooms were left unlocked and unattended. In several cases, for very short periods of time. Anyone witnessing unauthorized activity on campus is asked to immediately call 2525 with as much descriptive information as possible. Some basic theft prevention measures are listed below:

Precautions to Take:

• Do not leave valuables (including cash) in your room unattended. Take valuables home with you over the Christmas break period.
• Doors and windows to your residence halls should be locked. Peep holes should be used when allowing anyone access to your room and should not be removed. Always lock your doors when you are absent. Do not loan out your key or ID card.
• Never compromise your safety for a roommate who asks you to leave the door unlocked.
• Do not prop doors open and leave them unsecured day or night.
• Do not leave your identification, wallets, checkbooks, jewelry, cameras, and other valuables in open view.
• Program your phone's speed dial memory with emergency numbers that include Campus Security, family and friends.
• Know your neighbors and don't be reluctant to report illegal activities and suspicious loitering.
• Non-residents of a hall should not be allowed access to the hall unless they are the guests of a resident of that hall.
• All guests must be properly registered and should never be left unattended.
• Stay alert at all times and tuned in to the surroundings.
• Trust your instincts; get help right away if the situation or place is uncomfortable.

Anyone with information on any of these incidents is asked to provide information to the Safety & Security Department at 2525. If you prefer to remain anonymous, you can use the SBU “Silent Witness Program” located on the my.sbu.edu.

EMPLOYEE OPEN ENROLLMENT FOR DENTAL, VISION, AND FLEXIBLE SPENDING ACCOUNTS

Please note that open enrollment began Nov. 30, 2011. If you want to stay in the dental and/or vision plan you’re in now, you will not need to do anything to remain enrolled in those plans.

There are no benefit changes to the Guardian Dental Plan. 2012 rate changes are as follows:

High plan single coverage is $34.75 monthly (up from $29.20); family coverage is $98.47 (up from $82.75)
Low plan single coverage is $27.41 monthly (up from $23.03); family coverage is $74.28 (up from $62.42)

Employee options for the dental plan are to join, opt out, or change from the low to high plan (or vice versa).

There are no rate or benefit changes to the EyeMed vision plan; options are to opt out, enroll or do nothing (doing nothing will keep you with the same benefits you currently have). In order to align with the Blue Cross Blue Shield health insurance plan year, which runs fiscally June to May, effective Jan. 1, 2012, the flexible spending account will change to a 5 (five) month plan year ending May 31, 2012. The maximum dollar amount you may deposit into your health care FSA may not exceed $2,083 (5/12 of $5,000).

In order to obtain reimbursement from P&A in this short plan year, the eligible out-of-pocket medical, dental or vision expense must be incurred between Jan. 1, 2012 and May 31, 2012. One may not enroll in a flexible spending account if currently enrolled in the high-deductible (6205) health insurance plan. Those who are enrolled in the high-deductible health plan will receive information about their health savings account under separate cover.

If you would like to enroll in the flexible spending account, the Guardian dental plan or the EyeMed vision plan, it will be necessary to do so online. Please visit my.sbu.edu to enroll into or opt out of the dental and/or vision plans or to enroll into the five month flexible spending account. To do so, go to “Employee” then under the “Benefit Enrollment” heading, click on “Online Benefit Enrollment.”

Our open enrollment period began Wednesday, Nov. 30, 2011 and the last date to make any changes for this enrollment period is Friday, Dec. 9, 2011. Remember, if you want to stay in the dental and/or vision plan you’re in now, and if you do not want to enroll in the five month flexible spending account, you will not need to do anything. You remain in your previously elected health insurance plan until next open enrollment period, May 31, 2012. You will have an opportunity to enroll in a flexible spending account for June 1, 2012, through May 31, 2013, during the next open enrollment period.

Benefit summaries for all plans are included on the enrollment website. If you have any questions, please contact Jackie Zimmer at jzimmer@sbu.edu or x2115, or call Francine Schaefer at x2102.

IPADS IN HIGHER EDUCATION WORKSHOP

Technology Services has teamed up with Apple for an informative iPad workshop on Thursday, Jan. 12, 2012 in the University Club.

Agenda:

9:30-10:30 a.m. – Mobility in Today's Classroom
Many have said that technology is changing the educational landscape. While this may be true, mobile devices have done more than shift the educational terrain - it's blown up the bedrock. Mobile pedagogy represents a fundamental shift in content access and the role of the traditional classroom. Today's presentation isn't about trendy technology fads or the latest gadgets... this is about facing the challenges and maximizing the possibilities of a connected world.

10:30 a.m.-noon – Apple iPad in Motion
In this session, we’ll explore a “day in the life” of a student and instructor, and demonstrate how the iPad can be a powerful solution that transforms both the academic and personal experience. Participants will also understand how iPad improves learning workflow, enhances communication, fosters collaboration and contributes to a greener campus.

Noon – Lunch provided by Apple

These sessions will take place in the University Club. If you are planning on attending either of these iPad workshops, please RSVP to Dan Donner at ddonner@sbu.edu.
