WARMING HOUSE ANNUAL FOOD DELIVERY

Again this year, the Warming House is the recipient of a very generous gift from the students and faculty of St. Joseph’s Collegiate Institute of Buffalo. They will be delivering two truckloads of non-perishable food items on Wednesday, Dec. 21, between 10:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m.

If you are free during any portion of that time frame and would like to help unload the truck and/or stock the pantry shelves, we would greatly appreciate your help. Please contact Larry Sorokes (ext. 2304) (lsorokes@sbu.edu) or Nick Goodell (ext. 7813) (ngoodell@sbu.edu) if you are able to help.

This gift from St. Joe’s is the largest single gift the Warming House receives all year, often totaling over 40,000 items and valued well over $25,000. We would not be able to operate the Warming House without this outstanding gift.

We are still in need of volunteers to cook and serve over the holiday break. Please considering lending a hand. You can sign up via the website at www.thewarminghouse.org (go to the volunteer tab to view the calendar and sign up).

Thank you!

BOYER MODEL PROGRAM ON JAN. 13, 2012

A landmark work, "Scholarship Reconsidered: Priorities of the Professoriate," was published in 1990 by the then-President of The Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching, Ernest Boyer. The integrated scholarship model proposed by Boyer was the basis for another volume published by the Carnegie Foundation in 1997 titled "Scholarship Assessed: Evaluation of the Professoriate." A third volume has recently been published by the Carnegie Foundation, with a specific focus on “The Scholarship of Teaching and Learning.”

There have been a number of discussions on our campus recently about faculty evaluation standards and processes, criteria for the evaluation of faculty scholarship, and other related issues.

The Boyer model of integrated scholarship provides a widely recognized and accepted basis for addressing many of the questions before us, and was in fact the basis for the Faculty Summative Evaluation process approved by our Faculty Senate in 1997.

SUNY College at Buffalo has been participating for a number of years in a program funded by the Carnegie Foundation to integrate the Boyer model, with a specific focus on the scholarship of teaching and learning.

I would like to invite all interested faculty and staff to a presentation by and discussion with members of the Buffalo State faculty and academic administration regarding their experience with the application of the Boyer model on their campus.

The program will be held on Friday, Jan. 13, with a presentation from 10 to 11:30 a.m. in the Doyle Hall Jones Trustees Room, followed by a luncheon discussion in the Doyle Dining Room. To assist us in planning, I ask that you please let Barb O’Keefe (ext. 2121; bokeefe@sbu.edu) know if you will be attending.

Mike Fischer
Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs

IPADS IN HIGHER EDUCATION WORKSHOP

Technology Services has teamed up with Apple for an informative iPad workshop on Thursday, Jan. 12, 2012 in the University Club.

Agenda:

9:30-10:30 a.m. – Mobility in Today's Classroom
Many have said that technology is changing the educational landscape. While this may be true, mobile devices have done more than shift the educational terrain - it's blown up the bedrock. Mobile pedagogy represents a fundamental shift in content access and the role of the traditional classroom. Today's presentation isn't about trendy technology fads or the latest gadgets... this is about facing the challenges and maximizing the possibilities of a connected world.

10:30 a.m.-noon – Apple iPad in Motion
In this session, we’ll explore a “day in the life” of a student and instructor, and demonstrate how the iPad can be a powerful solution that transforms both the academic and personal experience. Participants will also understand how iPad improves learning workflow, enhances communication, fosters collaboration and contributes to a greener campus.

Noon – Lunch provided by Apple

These sessions will take place in the University Club. If you are planning on attending either of these iPad workshops, RSVP to Dan Donner at ddonner@sbu.edu.
