ADMISSIONS WELCOMES PROSPECTIVE STUDENT Rebecca Jefferds, a prospective freshman from Alfred Station, N.Y., interested in JMC. REILLY PRESENTS AT AMERICAN CATHOLIC PHILOSOPHICAL ASSOCIATION Dr. Richard Reilly, Board of Trustees Professor of Philosophy, was one of four presenters at the semi-annual regional meeting of the American Catholic Philosophical Association held at St. John Fisher College on April 21. His paper, “How is Natural Law Theory Relevant to Christian Morality?”, analyzes how both the Mosaic commandments and Jesus’ love commandments are understood by Thomas Aquinas and Jon Duns Scotus in the light of “natural reason.” Reilly argues that Aquinas was successful in interpreting natural law theory in a way consistent with Jesus’ teachings whereas Scotus was not. The upshot is that contemporary Catholic moral theologians should not subscribe to a principle of rational proportionalism in determining whether some intentional taking of human life is permissible. SBU BASKETBALL PLAYERS TEACH CLINIC FOR SPECIAL OLYMPIANS Members of St. Bonaventure University's men's and women's basketball teams gave back on Saturday, April 21, to the communities that cheered them through their 2012 NCAA runs. They joined with SIFE and the SBU School of Education in welcoming 10 New York Special Olympics basketball teams to St. Bonaventure for a day of play and learning. SI provides opportunities for all students enrolled in a targeted course to improve their mastery of course content (and hopefully their grades). Come and learn more! On May 15, SBU is offering a full-day professional development workshop on Supplemental Instruction. The workshop will be facilitated by Dr. Maureen Healy from the National Center for Supplemental Instruction. She will discuss theory, explore data on effectiveness, and engage participants in exercises to help them understand how and why SI works. The workshop will begin with breakfast at 8:30 a.m. and will run through 4:30 p.m. Lunch will be provided. Sign up for the workshop by emailing Nancy Casey (ncasey@sbu.edu). There is a limit on the number of participants, so secure your seat by registering soon.
