St. Bonaventure University Jazz Band to perform Nov. 14 at the Quick Center on campus

Nov 09, 2017 |

The St. Bonaventure University Jazz Band will be presented in concert at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 14, in Rigas Family Theater of the Regina A. Quick Center for the Arts. The concert is free and open to the public.

The band, under the direction of Leslie M. Sabina, chair of the Department of Visual and Performing Arts at St. Bonaventure, will play Big Band jazz songs that feature a variety of styles, including Latin, swing and rock, and a variety of grooves, said Sabina.

Composers of the selections include well-known jazz educators, such as Greg Yasinitsky of Washington State University, Victor Lopez of Miami International University, and Jim Nadel of Stanford University. A piece written by Sabina, titled “S’Kinetic,” features a drum solo by Patrick Dowdle, a freshman from Oswego, N.Y.

Other student soloists include Sarah Garraffo, a junior from Baldwinsville, N.Y., alto sax; LoriAnne Wickens, a graduate student from Bremen, Ind., trumpet; and tenor sax solos by Billy Vink, a junior from Westchester, Pa., and Michael Cook, a freshman from Allegany, N.Y.

Laura Peterson, a lecturer in the Department of Visual and Performing Arts, will be guest pianist for the concert.
