Freshman confirmations are running at a five-year high at St. Bonaventure University.
As of Friday, more than 440 freshmen had committed to the university for fall 2017.
Bernie Valento, vice president for Enrollment Management, said the university has seen an increase in students from New York state, bolstered by out-of-state students who will make up more than 30 percent of the freshman class.
May 1 is the unofficial College Decision Day, but almost all institutions continue enrolling students through the summer.
“We are doing well attracting students from our local and primary markets as well as taking advantage of our national reputation,” Valento said. “The incoming class is currently made up of students representing 21 states.”
Dr. Andrew Roth, university president, said he’s “very pleased that prospective students and their parents continue to recognize the outstanding quality, value and the return on investment St. Bonaventure provides its graduates. This continues to be reflected in Bona’s superior retention and graduation rates as well as access to a network of alumni committed to their future success.”
St. Bonaventure is in the first year of implementing its new strategic plan, which includes enrollment-driving initiatives such as allied health, cybersecurity, enhanced service and aid for veterans and their families, and men’s lacrosse.
The university has also expanded its online graduate programs in the last two years, attracting students from all over the country. SBU just added two counseling programs to its stable of online offerings.
“As we say goodbye to another class of seniors next weekend, we’re preparing for a busy summer as we continue to enroll more freshmen, transfers and graduate students for the fall,” Valento said.
