University president Sr. Margaret Carney, O.S.F., today announced the appointment of Bernard (Bernie) Valento as vice president for enrollment.
Valento will start his term of service with the University on May 18, 2015.
A native of Minnesota, Valento is currently the vice president for enrollment management at West Virginia Wesleyan University in Buckhannon, W.Va, where he is responsible for all areas of enrollment management, including overseeing undergraduate admissions, graduate admissions, financial aid, retention, and academic records, with shared responsibility for marketing.
Under his leadership, the university has enrolled the second-largest freshman class in 10 years while generating record net tuition and fee revenue.
Prior to his service at West Virginia Wesleyan, he served for nearly 15 years at the State University of New York College at Brockport, most recently as director of undergraduate admissions.
During his time at Brockport, the school experienced 15 consecutive years of enrollment success, exceeding quantity and quality goals. During this time, undergraduate enrollment grew by 549 students, increasing gross revenue by more than $7,000,000. Minority and downstate enrollment also grew by 200%.
Valento also served in admissions roles at Rochester Institute of Technology and Mercyhurst University in Erie, Pa.
“We are delighted to bring Bernie’s amazing track record of enrollment success back to Western New York,” said Sr. Margaret. “His enthusiasm for this work and his connections across the spectrum of professionals involved in college search and selection in New York and beyond will enable him to hit the ground running at St. Bonaventure.”
Valento said, “St. Bonaventure has a tremendous value proposition and brand, and I’m very much looking forward to working with the team there to build enrollments at all levels, while also contributing to the planning for additional enrollment driving programs and activities.
“I am also eager to reconnect with the tremendous network of high school counselors across the state,” he added.
Valento earned the master of science in Career & Human Resource Development: OD from Rochester Institute of Technology and the bachelor of arts in Organizational Resource Management: Marketing from Mercyhurst University.
