Jandoli School Internships & Fellowships

Students in the Jandoli School are required to complete at least 400 hours (100 hours for transfer students) of approved internships in order to graduate.

The value of internships

Internships are important learning experiences. They let students see how course material is applied in the workplace, present opportunities for students to live and work in new places, and can even lead to full-time employment upon graduation.

We believe our internship requirement is one of the key reasons our students step right from graduation into starting positions with key communications industry organizations, and why our graduates are among the industry's top achievers today.

Internships allow students to:

discover their passion for a particular career path
make valuable professional contacts
measure their skills against professional standards
learn firsthand from people in professions they may be considering
develop "people" skills, confidence and successful workplace habits

News fellowships available at Rochester's WHEC-TV

The Jandoli School of Communication partners with the news department at WHEC-TV in Rochester, New York, to offer part-time, 16-hour paid fellowships at the TV station.

Fellows shadow producers, reporters and photographers to learn and execute job duties, and work directly with experienced reporters, producers, digital media experts and others to:

learn newsgathering, writing and reporting skills
write stories for station websites
assist producers with the all aspects of producing a newscast.

Internship information and resources

The 400 hours of internships required to receive a diploma must be completed while the student is enrolled at St. Bonaventure.
All internships must be approved by the school's internship coordinator.
No more than 100 hours may be completed for credit in on-campus internships. The remaining 300 hours must be completed in off-campus internships.
NOTE: Activities that result in academic credit toward a course (other than JMC 499/SC 499. Comprehensive Experience) cannot be applied toward the 400-hour requirement.

On Campus

Communications-related work for a student-run organization, such as (but not limited to) an internship with:

campus radio station WSBU-FM
The Bona Venture student newspaper
Digital magazine Her Campus @ SBU
Campus literary magazine The Laurel
The St. Bonaventure chapter of the American Advertising Federation

Off Campus

Communications-related work under professional supervision in a professional setting, such as:

a radio or television station
a public relations or advertising firm
a company that publishes newspapers, magazines, newsletters, websites, etc.
a St. Bonaventure University department, such as University Relations, the Regina A. Quick Center for the Arts, and the Sports Information Office. Although these are on-campus locations, these internships involve professional supervision in a professional setting.

The Jandoli School keeps students up to date on internship opportunities throughout the school year. Students are notified of opportunities by email, Twitter and Facebook. Professors notify their students in classes as well.

The Jandoli School is fortunate to have a very loyal and helpful alumni family that consistently looks first to their alma mater when creating or staffing internship opportunities. We urge students to take advantage of alumni-student networking events held on campus often.

Internship advisers (those who supervise SBU students during their internships) are asked to complete on online evaluation form linked below for each intern they supervise.

The total number of internship hours worked must be included on the form. Students should discuss this requirement with their supervisors at the start of the internship to ensure they receive credit for all hours worked.
