A group from St. Bonaventure University attended the 14th General Meeting of the International Thomas Merton Society, held June 4-7 at Bellarmine University, in Louisville, Ky. The meeting celebrated the 100th anniversary of Merton's birth. From left are junior Ryan Nation; Erin Dempsey, '15; Abbot Elias Dietz of the Our Lady of Gethsemani Abbey; Troy Hillmann, '15; Rev. Rowan Williams, former Archbishop of Canterbury; Drew Belfield, '15; Julianne Wallace, associate director of faith formation, worship and ministry; and Alva Cellini, chair of the Department of Modern Languages. After teaching English at St. Bonaventure in 1940-41, Merton became a Trappist monk at Gethsemani, not far from Bellarmine, which houses the world's largest collection of Merton-related items.
