The aim of this project was to write and complete my first fiction novel, from beginning to end. I wrote 42,000 words (121 pages), and then revised and restructured edited sections of the novel after I wrote it. This is a synopsis of the book:
Do you listen to the voices in your head? Alice does.
She’s not crazy, but she’s not your ordinary teenager, either. Sure, she’s worried about failing math, her single mother’s depression, and falling into her perfect sister’s shadow, but soon Alice realizes she has bigger problems to worry about.
Alice is a Communicator — someone with the ability to speak to her guardian from Heaven. It’s her responsibility to listen to her Communicator and stop Hell from taking over Earth.
But Alice has a secret that she won’t share with him. A secret that puts the entire world at risk.
As Alice gets to know her guardian, Evangel, better, she discovers that the line between right and wrong isn’t as straightforward as she thought. She realizes that she needs to choose what’s right for herself, and decide whether or not to tell Evangel her secret.
But as time runs out, the line between right and wrong begins to blur.
“From Pythagoras to Xenakis: Mathematical Influence in Musical Composition”
Mathematics and music have been intricately connected since the beginning of musical composition. Although many composers did not, until very recently, understand the mathematics behind their works, there is a fairly large amount of different forms of mathematical analysis present behind many works. This project focused on the evolution of the use of mathematics in musical composition, from Pythagoras and Bach to the computerized random compositions created by Xenakis.
“Drinking and Driving Kills, but Can Public Service Announcements Save? An Analysis Testing Anti-Drinking and Driving Advertising Comprehensiveness and Effectiveness” This paper questions the relationship of public service announcements (PSAs) and people’s perceptions. This study examined whether PSAs impact the changing of perceptions related to the subject of drinking and driving. By conducting a survey and analyzing the data using descriptive statistics and a paired simple means test, I evaluated whether PSAs changed these perceptions. This study uses scholarly research and information provided by the participants of the survey. The findings show that public service announcements have a statistically significant impact on changing people’s perceptions when it relates to drinking and driving. These conclusions suggest that further research needs to be done in order to conduct more statistical tests on the impact of PSAs; how/if resources should be allocated to PSAs to increase changes in perception; and perhaps how changes in perception could lead to changes in behavior.
“Working Memory and Education”
My project is a literary review of research on working memory and how it relates to the field of education. I have created a teacher-resource website that explains working memory in a way that helps teachers understand the importance of this research in their classroom. I have included strategies and lesson plans that teachers can use to incorporate working memory research in their classroom in order to help their students become better learners. I also wrote a paper that discusses the research and teaching strategies in more depth than the website.
