St. Bonaventure University hosted students from seven area elementary and middle schools at its annual Challenge-24 Mathematics Contest.
The Challenge-24 Competition is a mathematics competition hosted each spring for grades 3 through 7 by the SBU Department of Mathematics. Forty-five students from Austin Area, Cuba-Rushford, East View Elementary, Hinsdale, Olean Intermediate-Middle School, Otto-Eldred and Portville schools participated in this year’s competition.
Developed by Robert Sun in 1988, Challenge-24 is a game in which contestants are presented with four numbers between 1 and 9. The object is to combine the numbers, using each number exactly once, to produce an answer of 24. Any of the standard arithmetic operations including addition, subtraction, multiplication or division, may be used as needed to get the result.
