St. Bonaventure University’s Mock Trial Team competed against 24 teams on March 14-16 at the Opening Round Championship Series of the American Mock Trial Association’s national tournament at Miami University in Hamilton, Ohio.
The American Mock Trial Association (AMTA) honored the SBU team with the Spirit Award, awarded to the group that best exemplifies the AMTA standards of civility, justice and fair play.
“The award is based upon ratings by the team’s competitors over the course of the tournament,” said Alexander Noguerola, vice president and tournament director of SBU’s mock trial team. “We were given two 10-point rankings, one 9-point ranking, and were ranked No. 1 one among the three teams that scored us.”
The team advanced to the national competition after finishing 7-1 against other local colleges at The American Mock Trial Association Buffalo Regional Tournament at Buffalo State on Feb. 8-9, marking the first time St. Bonaventure has qualified for the national tournament since 1998.
“Although Bonaventure will not be moving to the National Championship Tournament, I am extremely proud of our team,” Noguerola said. “It is a great accomplishment to even make it to the ORCS Tournament in Hamilton, and our team gave it their all.”
The tournament began with an evening trial on Friday, followed by two trials on Saturday and a morning trial on Sunday. St. Bonaventure faced teams from Xavier University, Miami University, University of Pittsburgh and Bellarmine University.
Noguerola said the team will use the experience to plan for next year’s competitions.
“There is no doubt that St. Bonaventure will be a force to be reckoned with next year,” he said. With the experience gained and with much of the team returning next year, we will be even more competitive and have consistent performances across the board.”
